Not long ago, Maya Boyd was a name mostly familiar to Broadway audiences and her TikTok followers. Today, the 23-year-old is one of the most closely watched young actresses in Hollywood, thanks to a role that comes with decades of fan expectation.

That changed on August 14, when Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed the cast of the new ‘X-Men’ film at D23 in Anaheim, California. Boyd was unveiled as Ororo Munroe, better known as Storm, in what will be her feature film debut. The announcement made her one of the most searched names in Hollywood almost overnight.

Now the ‘X-Men’ star is keeping fans talking with a fresh set of photos shared on her own Instagram. In one shot, she sits in the back of a car in a silver metallic dress with sheer detailing, her natural curls framing her face. In the other, she takes a mirror selfie in a black halter top, layered gold necklaces, a black leather jacket and a leather cap.

The 2 looks show real range, from glamorous evening wear to relaxed street style. They’re also a reminder that Boyd was comfortable on social media long before Marvel came calling. She built a following of more than 450,000 on TikTok through skits, family videos and singing clips.

Boyd made her Broadway debut in 2023 in ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ while she was still a senior finishing her musical theatre degree at the University of Michigan. She later landed the title role in ‘& Juliet’, performing from April 2024 to June 2025, and has also appeared in ‘Joe Turner’s Come and Gone’.

Marvel’s choice of a stage performer for a major role isn’t a one-off. In July, the studio gave Black Panther to David Jonsson, an actor with a theater background who is best known for ‘Industry’. Taken together, the 2 castings suggest Marvel is deliberately looking beyond traditional movie stars.

It’s also a rare gamble on a relatively unknown talent for a beloved lead role. Some fans have pointed to Hugh Jackman, who was a little-known name when he was cast as Wolverine in 2000. One outlet argued that Boyd has the most to prove among the newly announced cast, since she is stepping onto the big screen for the first time.

Boyd is the 3rd actress to play Storm on screen. Halle Berry introduced the character in 2000’s ‘X-Men’, and Alexandra Shipp played a younger version in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ and ‘Dark Phoenix’. Berry has previously confirmed she won’t return as Storm for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.

Boyd’s casting has been celebrated by fans who spent years asking Marvel to choose a dark-skinned Black actress for Storm, reflecting the character’s African heritage. Social media reaction was warm, with some users comparing her path from stage to screen to the careers of Denzel Washington and Viola Davis.

Right after the news broke, Boyd had a little fun with the moment by filling her Instagram bio with lightning bolt emojis. It was a small gesture, but it showed she understood exactly what the role means to fans.

She will be joined by Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue and Christopher Abbott as Professor X. Adam Driver is set to play the villain Mr. Sinister. The untitled film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 5, 2028.

Boyd has also been making her mark in the fashion world. On October 6, she attended the Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2027 show at the Louvre during Paris Fashion Week, where the guest list included Zendaya, Emma Stone, BLACKPINK’s Lisa and Sophie Turner. Photos from the evening drew praise from Marvel fans and fashion followers for her polished look.

With the film still a long way from release, social media is where fans will get most of their glimpses of the new Storm for now. Each new post adds to the anticipation, and the spotlight on Boyd is only going to get brighter.
