Grown-up romantic dramas are a rare sight on the big screen these days, which is part of what makes ‘Love of Your Life‘ stand out this fall. The film, directed by Rachel Morrison, world-premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. It then moved into a staggered release plan that puts it in front of audiences twice.

Amazon MGM Studios opened the film in select theaters on Wednesday, October 7. It will stream globally on Prime Video on October 14. That makes this week a busy stretch for Margaret Qualley, who leads the cast and has been out front promoting it.

A fresh press photo from the campaign has fans talking. The image shows Qualley leaning against a wall in soft window light, wearing an olive-green halter top with a subtle suede-like texture. Her dark hair falls loose in glossy waves past her shoulders, and she gazes at the camera with a calm, steady expression.

The styling is simple and refined. A muted green palette, natural-looking makeup and a soft pink lip let her features take center stage. It suits a film that rests heavily on its lead performance.

Qualley plays Maya, a smart, wry nurse whose chance encounter with Charlie, played by Gabriel Basso, sets off a sweeping romance and a future she never imagined. When that future is suddenly upended, Maya is sent into an unexpected new chapter. She has to figure out who she is, what she wants and how to love again.

The film follows Maya from age 26 into her mid-thirties, using chapter headings to mark the passing years. Aaron Pierre plays Felix and Patrick Schwarzenegger plays Jason, and Catherine Keener plays Ruth. Tamara Lawrance and Corey Johnson round out the cast.

Morrison is an Oscar-nominated cinematographer who made her directorial debut with ‘The Fire Inside’ in 2024. ‘Love of Your Life’ is her sophomore feature, and it marks her return to TIFF. Julia Cox wrote the screenplay, and Ryan Gosling and Jessie Henderson produce. Dustin O’Halloran composed the score.

The film was a notable presence at the festival, and the cast and filmmakers have been out in force since. Amazon MGM hosted a special screening at the IFC Theater in New York on October 7, with Qualley, Pierre, Morrison and Henderson in attendance. Qualley, 31 and Emmy-nominated, is currently in the middle of a busy year.

Reviews have been mixed. The Hollywood Reporter found the film to be a beautiful but ultimately unpersuasive travelogue of grief and love. Variety called it a pretty but surface-level healing journey, while still singling out Qualley’s performance for its intelligence and emotional openness.

Other critics were warmer. The AV Club praised it as a refreshingly grown-up romance and a character study of Maya, noting that it swerves in unexpected directions. Another outlet named it one of the most touching films to come out of this year’s TIFF, crediting a powerful supporting turn from Keener. Roger Ebert’s site, meanwhile, gave it 1.5 stars and called it forgettable.

The film adds to a full calendar for Qualley, who has also appeared in ‘How to Make a Killing’ and is attached to Ridley Scott’s upcoming film ‘The Dog Stars’. Fans first saw her in a leading role opposite Demi Moore in ‘The Substance’. Her ability to shift between romance, thriller and drama is part of what has made her one of the most closely watched actors of her generation.

Whether or not critics agree on the film itself, the performance is drawing consistent attention. With the Prime Video release a few days away, the promotional run is entering its final stretch. The new photo shows a star in her element.
