Film festivals are usually about the movies, but every so often one moment on the red carpet gets everyone talking. At this year’s BFI London Film Festival, Scarlett Johansson‘s smile became exactly that kind of moment.

She arrived for a packed day of events, presenting two very different films at the festival. The result was a day full of red dresses, big laughs and plenty of buzz.

The 70th BFI London Film Festival opened on October 7 and has drawn big names including Robert Pattinson, Adam Driver, Jenna Ortega, Sebastian Stan and Cynthia Erivo. Johansson is presenting two films at the event, and both premiered on Saturday, October 10.

She started the day with the world premiere of ‘Ray Gunn’, Brad Bird’s long-gestating animated noir, at the Royal Festival Hall. Co-star Sam Rockwell and Bird posed with her. The film runs 119 minutes, and a second festival screening is set for the BFI IMAX on October 17.

The images that set social media buzzing came from her red carpet interviews. In them, Johansson is caught mid-laugh, her blonde bob swinging as she holds a BFI-branded microphone and chats with reporters.

She wears a red dress with thin straps and a gold collar-style necklace, and her expression is unmistakably joyful. In one frame she grins with her eyes squeezed shut, and in another she tips her head back in laughter. Coverage of the day singled out her smile as much as her outfit, with one outlet describing it as a smile fans can’t ignore.

It is a refreshing contrast to the polished poses of a typical carpet. These shots show a star who is clearly enjoying the moment.

The smile came with some serious fashion. For ‘Ray Gunn’, Johansson wore a red strapless Hermès Resort 2027 dress with red Manolo Blahnik Leva sandals and a delicate Cece Jewellery pendant.

Later that evening she changed for the gala screening of ‘Paper Tiger’, wearing a custom red Prada silk georgette gown. The bias-cut dress featured a ruched, draped bodice and was paired with a Barron London necklace.

The red theme was hard to miss. One outlet joked that when your name is Scarlett, you wear scarlet.

At the ‘Paper Tiger’ premiere, Johansson posed with co-star Adam Driver and director James Gray. Driver wore an all-black suit, matching shirt and tie, and Johansson appeared in high spirits as the pair reunited for photographs.

The film is a crime drama about a 1980s suburban American family who become involved with a Russian mafia mob. Miles Teller also stars.

There is more at stake than a good red carpet. Neon, the film’s distributor in the United States and United Kingdom, is reportedly set to campaign for Johansson to win a best supporting actress Oscar for her performance.

Neon also hopes to push Teller for best actor and Driver for best supporting actor. Johansson, who is 41, has received two Oscar nominations and is a BAFTA winner, but has yet to win an Academy Award.

‘Paper Tiger’ opens nationwide in the United States on November 20, and no UK release date has been confirmed. The Oscars will be handed out in March 2027.

Part of the appeal is how rare these glimpses can be. Johansson doesn’t use social media, so her fans often go months without hearing from her, and a red carpet appearance is usually the main chance to see her.

Seeing her laugh so openly on a day with two premieres feels like a bonus. It also hints at how comfortable she is with these projects, one a big-hearted animated noir and the other a tense crime drama with awards ambitions.
