Chuck Lorre Reveals the Alarming State Charlie Sheen Was in While Filming His Final ‘Two and a Half Men’ Scene
Few sitcom exits have been as messy or as public as Charlie Sheen’s departure from ‘Two and a Half Men’. More than a decade later, the show’s creator is offering a fresh, firsthand account of how it all ended on set.
Chuck Lorre’s upcoming memoir ‘Sitcom’ promises to revisit that turbulent chapter, and an excerpt has already put Sheen’s last days on the show back in the spotlight.
Vanity Fair published an excerpt from the book on Friday, October 9, ahead of its October 13 release. In it, the 73-year-old Lorre describes how things with Sheen, now 61, started to unravel.
Sheen played Charlie Harper for eight seasons, from 2004 to 2011. The show had been a blast to make, Lorre writes, until Sheen started calling in sick all the time.
According to Lorre, the last scene he shot with Sheen was opposite Melanie Lynskey, who played Charlie’s neighbor Rose. Lorre writes that Sheen couldn’t remember any of his lines and had to hold on to the furniture to stay upright.
Lorre says Lynskey was terrified. It was clear to everyone, he recalls, that a man the cast and crew had grown to love was in trouble, and he felt he had no choice but to shut the production down.
That account is Lorre’s alone, and it is worth noting that The Daily Beast and Entertainment Weekly both reached out to representatives for Sheen and Lynskey for comment. Lynskey said in 2018 that Sheen had always been kind to her.
The excerpt describes a set where nobody knew what would happen next. Lorre writes that the cast and crew worked in a constant state of anxiety.
He says the excuses for missed work kept piling up. They included food poisoning, usually blamed on bad clams, a string of emergency dental appointments and one occasion when Sheen supposedly couldn’t attend rehearsal because a lighter had exploded and burned off his eyelashes.
After that final scene, Lorre says he called Sheen and told him the show would film two more episodes and then break for a desperately needed three-month hiatus, so Sheen could get help. Sheen reportedly insisted, angrily, on shooting four more.
Lorre speculates that Sheen may have needed the money. Sheen did go to rehab after CBS executives urged him to, but it didn’t go as planned, according to Sheen’s own memoir.
In February 2011, CBS halted production for the rest of the season after Sheen entered rehab and made disparaging comments about Lorre. Sheen’s contract was terminated the following month, and Ashton Kutcher replaced him.
Sheen has offered a different explanation for his behavior at the time. In his 2025 memoir ‘The Book of Sheen’, he said a testosterone cream he was using turned him into a raging demon toward the end of his run on the show.
Lorre, for his part, writes that Sheen spent his time away from work getting loaded rather than getting straightened out. The two accounts are very different, and neither has been independently verified.

The excerpt ends on a gentler note. Lorre recalls running into Sheen years later and says Sheen was gracious and grateful, while the pair avoided digging into the whole ‘Two and a Half Men’ nightmare.
The reconciliation has been visible onscreen too. Sheen was reported to have joined Lorre’s Max comedy ‘Bookie’, which marked their first collaboration since the falling out. Lynskey, who has since found success in shows like ‘The Last of Us’ and ‘Yellowjackets’, has said she would be open to a reunion.
The series ran for 12 seasons on CBS, from 2003 to 2015, and the Sheen era remains its most talked-about chapter. Fans have long wondered what really happened behind the scenes as the star’s troubles became public.
Lorre’s account adds one more detail to that picture, a moment that, in his telling, made the decision to stop the show unavoidable. It is also a reminder that behind the laughs on a hit sitcom, real people were dealing with real struggles.
With ‘Sitcom’ arriving on October 13, more behind-the-scenes stories are likely to follow.
