Marvel fans have never really stopped asking where the ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ team went. The series ended in 2020, and its characters have been missing from the wider franchise ever since.

A brand-new Marvel Television project is now putting those hopes back in the spotlight, and a fresh report is fueling them.

At New York Comic Con on October 8, Marvel Television head Brad Winderbaum announced ‘Zodiac‘, a live-action spy thriller headed to Disney+ in 2028. It is the first new live-action Marvel series announced since ‘Ironheart’, which premiered last year.

Filming begins in London in spring 2027, and casting will start within the next couple of weeks. Beyond the title and a first logo, Marvel has revealed almost nothing, with no cast, plot, episode count or release date announced.

That secrecy has left room for speculation. A report from an industry insider says some characters from ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ will return in ‘Zodiac’. Marvel has not confirmed any connection, so it should be treated as a rumor for now.

The idea has fans excited for good reason. The new logo features a wheel design with what looks like an eagle in the letter A, which many viewers read as a nod to the S.H.I.E.L.D. emblem. Another insider noted the S.H.I.E.L.D. logo in the title art and said ‘Zodiac’ is the actual title, not a production codename.

The title also has deep comic book roots. The Zodiac cartel first appeared in ‘Avengers’ #72 in 1970, featuring twelve supervillain leaders who each represent a zodiac sign.

Later, writer Jonathan Hickman introduced the Great Wheel, a secret organization of spymasters created by a time-traveling Leonardo da Vinci. The group included S.H.I.E.L.D. members Nick Fury, Dum Dum Dugan and John Garrett, along with members of Hydra and the Hand. Winderbaum himself invited comic readers to look for clues in the logo, though Marvel hasn’t confirmed which version the show will use.

Fans noticed that Clark Gregg, who played Phil Coulson, shared the ‘Zodiac’ announcement on his Instagram Stories. Some saw it as a possible tease of Coulson’s return, while others cautioned that it could be nothing more than a reaction to the news.

Fans have also been calling for Chloe Bennet’s Daisy Johnson, also known as Quake, to come back. One reply to Marvel’s announcement simply read welcome back daisy johnson, while another asked if Daisy might return.

The practical question is where S.H.I.E.L.D. even sits in current continuity. Officially, the organization no longer exists in the MCU and has been replaced by S.W.O.R.D. Some argue that makes it a better setting for a spy story, since a secret organization works best when it officially doesn’t exist.

‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ ran for seven seasons, ending in 2020. Its core cast included Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Brett Dalton, Bennet, Iain De Caestecker and Elizabeth Henstridge, with Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen and Jeffrey Bell as showrunners.

‘Zodiac’ arrives as Marvel reshapes its small-screen strategy. ‘VisionQuest’, starring Paul Bettany as Vision, premieres on Disney+ on October 14 and concludes the story that began with ‘WandaVision’.

‘Daredevil: Born Again’ is set to end next year, with a possible Defenders reunion to follow. Meanwhile, ‘Wonder Man’ was canceled just months after its January premiere. Against that backdrop, a new spy series with a built-in legacy audience looks like a smart bet.

For now, almost everything about ‘Zodiac’ is unconfirmed. Marvel hasn’t said whether it connects to the wider MCU or whether it is a limited run or the first chapter of a longer story.

The next few weeks should bring more clarity, since casting is about to begin. If any ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ stars are involved, a casting announcement would be the clearest sign.
