‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Hits China Early, and Doctor Doom’s Massive New Poster Is Stealing the Spotlight
Few markets matter more to a blockbuster’s global fortunes than China, and Marvel knows it. When ‘Avengers: Endgame’ arrived in 2019, it earned roughly $575.8 million in China alone during its first 11 days of release. That history makes every piece of marketing aimed at Chinese audiences worth watching.
This time, Disney is rolling out something special for the next Avengers chapter. Directed by the Russo brothers, ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ is set to open in the US on December 18, and the studio has been unveiling region-specific promotional art as the date approaches. The newest example comes from China, and it comes with a notable surprise.
Disney has confirmed that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will arrive in Chinese theaters on December 16, two days ahead of its US release. The studio marked the announcement with an official local poster that shows Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom looming over a huge lineup of heroes. The Chinese title translates to ‘Avengers 5.’
It’s official! #AvengersDoomsday arrives on DEC 16 in #China’s #BoxOffice, as Disney drops #Doomsday’s official local poster. The new #Avengers film, titled as #Avengers5 in China, is #1 most anticipated Hollywood film of 2026 locally, surpassing #DunePartThree & #TheOdyssey. China will be one of the 5 international markets which will be able to screen Doomsday in IMAX theatres.

The artwork leans into the film’s scale, with the villain’s green-hooded face dominating the upper portion while the heroes gather below in a dramatic cloud of light and smoke. It also advertises a range of premium formats, including IMAX, 3D and Dolby screenings. That variety signals how big a release Disney is planning for the market.
The poster also carries a global early release line, underscoring the idea that China will be among the first places in the world to see the film. For a franchise whose past entries performed extremely well there, that’s a strategic choice. It gives the film a head start on word of mouth.
Early signs suggest audiences are eager. On Douban’s list of the most anticipated foreign-language films of 2026, ‘Avengers 5’ currently sits at No. 1, ahead of ‘Dune: Part Three’ and ‘The Odyssey.’ Beating those two films is notable, since they are among the year’s biggest event releases.
Ticketing data also looks strong. On Maoyan, China’s largest online ticketing platform, the film’s want-to-see count stood at 253,000 at 69 days before release, closing in on the 264,000 that ‘Avengers: Endgame’ reached at the same point. For a franchise that has been away from the main Avengers banner for years, that’s a promising start.
IMAX is a major part of the story. ‘Dune: Part Three’ has secured an exclusive three-week IMAX window in North America, which leaves ‘Doomsday’ out of the format in the US despite opening on the same day. In most territories, the film will only play in IMAX in select international markets.
China is one of them, with IMAX screenings confirmed for the film there back in July. Reports say it’s one of only a handful of international markets, around five, where ‘Doomsday’ will play in the format. In the markets without IMAX, Disney has created its own premium certification, Infinity Vision, which covers formats like Dolby Cinema, Cinemark XD and Regal RPX.
IMAX’s chief executive has publicly called Infinity Vision just a branding move, a comment that adds to the tension between the two studios. Even so, access to the giant screens in China gives ‘Doomsday’ a meaningful advantage in one of the world’s biggest theater markets. It could also help soften the blow of the format battle at home.

The December 18 date is already crowded. ‘Doomsday’ was originally scheduled for May 1, 2026, before moving to its current slot, where it will go head to head with ‘Dune: Part Three.’ Neither studio has blinked, and the standoff has become one of the biggest storylines of the holiday season.
For Marvel, a strong start in China could set the tone for the global rollout. A two-day head start, a top anticipation ranking and premium screens all work in its favor. With the clock ticking, the studio seems determined to make every market count.
Can Avengers: Doomsday beat Dune: Part Three at the December box office?
