Paul Bettany Isn’t Hanging Up Vision’s Cape: ‘VisionQuest’ Star Says He’ll Keep Playing the Marvel Android as Long as He’s Asked

Few actors have taken as unusual a path through the MCU as Paul Bettany. He began as the voice of J.A.R.V.I.S. in ‘Iron Man’, then finally appeared on screen as Vision in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, and he has been circling the character ever since through death, reconstruction and a very strange sitcom.

That journey has reached another milestone with ‘VisionQuest‘, Marvel Television’s new Disney+ series, which premiered on October 14. It is described as the final chapter in the story that began with ‘WandaVision’ and continued through ‘Agatha All Along’, with Terry Matalas serving as showrunner and James Spader returning as Ultron.

With the series underway, fans have been asking the obvious question about what comes next for Vision. Speaking to Square Mile in an interview published on October 21, Bettany was asked whether he has more places to take the character or whether this is his swansong, and he made his position clear. He said those decisions are made by people further up the food chain, but that he loves playing Vision and “I will keep doing it if I’m asked to be involved.”

Bettany’s answer isn’t a confirmation of anything, and it is notably tied to the story. He said he wants the stories to be interesting, moving and fresh, which suggests he sees Vision as a character worth protecting rather than one to keep using for the sake of it.

It also fits his general approach. The actor has long been candid about how little control he has over Marvel’s plans, and this answer reflects a performer who is willing but also realistic.

The series centers on the White Vision, the version of the character who flew away at the end of ‘WandaVision’ without his past in order. It follows him as he struggles to connect with memories that were given to him, and a mercenary on his trail.

The cast includes Todd Stashwick as Paladin, James D’Arcy as J.A.R.V.I.S. and Ruaridh Mollica as Tommy Maximoff. The show runs for eight episodes between October and November, and Bettany has described it as feeling like the end of a trilogy of sorts, while also setting Vision up for Marvel’s next Avengers era.

The next question is whether Vision will appear in the big movies. ‘VisionQuest’ is the last live-action Marvel series before ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which opens on December 18, followed by ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ on December 17, 2027. Bettany has not been formally confirmed for either film.

He has hinted at his involvement. On Josh Horowitz’s podcast, he said he’s pretty sure he’ll appear in one of them, but that Marvel can change course at any moment, and he told The Telegraph earlier that he has some Avengers duties next year. He also noted that when half the Avengers died in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, the cast found out on the day they filmed it, which shows how closely Marvel guards its secrets.

Vision remains one of the MCU’s most unusual characters, defined by memory, identity and rebirth instead of a clean heroic arc. His story has moved from a newly born AI to a love story with Wanda, a death at Thanos’s hands and a reconstructed White Vision searching for who he was.

That makes him a natural fit for the kind of high-concept storytelling the franchise is leaning on again. If Marvel is looking for emotional stakes among its ensemble, Vision’s search for meaning gives it plenty to work with.

Bettany’s comments also reflect his long history with the studio. Square Mile’s piece recounts how he landed the role, including a famous story about a producer telling him he’d never work again before Joss Whedon called to offer Vision. It’s a reminder of how far the part has taken him.

For fans, the takeaway is simple. As long as Marvel wants to tell good stories with Vision, Bettany is ready to return, and the next few months will show whether that call comes.
