Halloween marketing stunts usually mean pumpkin-spice everything or a costume contest. Tubi has gone a different route this year, transforming a hearse into a rolling horror attraction for Los Angeles. The streamer’s haunted hearse is offering free rides this weekend, and it is as macabre as it sounds.

The stunt is part of ‘Terror on Tubi,’ the free streaming service’s long-running Halloween celebration. The brand has leaned hard into horror, and this year it is taking the genre out of the living room and onto the street. The vehicle is built for those who like their scares delivered in person.

From Thursday, October 29, through Saturday, October 31, guests of the Los Angeles Haunted Hayride can ride the hearse from the parking lot to the event in Griffith Park. The rides run from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. PT each night, and they cost nothing. The pickup point is the Haunted Hayride parking lot at 4730 Crystal Springs Dr.

Tubi describes the ride as an immersive horror experience. The hearse is filled with surprises and special effects, including creepy lighting and spooky physical touches inside the vehicle. It is designed to turn what would normally be a short walk or shuttle into part of the show.

Riders can also capture the moment. The experience includes photo and video setups for reaction clips, so guests can share their reactions on social media. Everyone who steps out also gets giveaway items.

Tubi says the hearse extends ‘Terror on Tubi’ beyond the screen, creating a shareable, street-level experience for fans. That fits a broader strategy. The service launched a permanent Terror on Tubi Hub in August, turning what had been a seasonal event into a year-round destination for horror.

The hub brings together more than 13,000 hours of horror and will also host Tubi Originals arriving this fall. The streamer says viewers have already watched more than 53 million hours of horror on the platform. In that context, a hearse is a fitting mascot.

Tubi has good reason to keep investing in scares. The service is free and says it has more than 110 million monthly active users, with over 375,000 movies and TV shows. Its previous ‘Terror on Tubi’ event reportedly drove more than 100 million hours of total viewing, a 51% increase from the year before.

This season’s lineup includes a sequel to the Tubi Original ‘R.L. Stine’s Pumpkinhead,’ which debuted last year as part of the celebration. The new film, which features Elvira, arrived free on October 9. The promotional imagery for the hearse itself nods to ‘The Hearse,’ a horror title now streaming on the platform.

The hearse is not the brand’s first attempt at horror-flavored merchandise. Last Halloween, Tubi offered its first fandom-fueled collectible, a limited-edition sleeping bag shaped like a body bag. It carried a cheeky disclaimer saying the owner was alive and watching Tubi, and it was available as a free giveaway.

That mix of dark humor and fan service seems to be the formula. The company has said it wants to celebrate horror lovers in a way that feels true to their passion, and the hearse follows the same playbook with a bit more theater.

The destination is almost as important as the ride. The Los Angeles Haunted Hayride is an annual Halloween event in Griffith Park, and it has become one of the city’s best-known haunts. According to Time Out, the event now takes place at the Crystal Springs Picnic Area, which becomes a fictional mid-’80s town called Midnight Falls.

Besides the hayride itself, there are mazes and several scare zones, including a dark maze and a trick-or-treating area. A hearse ride from the parking lot makes a fitting opening act for a night of that kind of fright.

With Halloween falling on Saturday, there is still time to catch it. The hearse runs each night through October 31, so anyone already heading to the hayride can hop in for free. The experience is open only to guests of the event, so it is worth checking the hayride’s details before heading out.

Would you ride in Tubi's haunted hearse this Halloween?
