Vin Diesel Teases ‘Fast Forever’ Preproduction by ‘Casting’ the Cars
The ‘Fast & Furious‘ franchise has always been about 2 things: family and the machines that carry them. So it fits that the latest update on the saga’s final chapter doesn’t involve a script reveal or a cast announcement. It comes in the form of a garage full of classic cars.
The series began in 2001, and the next film will arrive about 27 years after the first. Universal has titled the finale ‘Fast Forever’ and set it for March 17, 2028, with the movie intended to conclude the mainline saga that ‘Fast X’ left on a cliffhanger in 2023. Between the long gap and the franchise’s history of shifting plans, fans have spent years watching for signs of real movement.
Now Vin Diesel has offered one. The 59-year-old posted a set of photos on Instagram showing the inside of a garage packed with vehicles, including a white classic muscle car parked in the foreground and more covered cars lined up behind it. His caption described the phase as preproduction and joked that choosing the cars is always the fun part.
The post lands as the most concrete sign so far that ‘Fast Forever’ is gearing up. Diesel had previously said he hoped to start filming by the end of 2026, and the garage photos appear to confirm that preproduction is underway. Fans have been hungry for any news, since details on the film have remained scarce for months.
Diesel has a long track record of using social media to tease the franchise. In 2025, he shared videos of Dom’s black muscle cars, including a Challenger, a Road Runner and a Barracuda, along with a classic 1970 Dodge Charger R/T from the first film. He has also said he wants the series to get back to real street racing and practical stunts, which makes a garage full of vintage metal feel like a statement of intent.
Louis Leterrier is set to direct, returning after he took over ‘Fast X’ when original director Justin Lin left abruptly in the first week of production. Michael Lesslie is credited as a writer, and the producers include Neal H. Moritz, Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jeff Kirschenbaum, Joe Roth and Samantha Vincent. Universal has not yet confirmed a full cast or a complete synopsis.
The project has also had a bumpy road to this point. The finale was once planned as ‘Fast X: Part 2’ and was expected to arrive much earlier, with earlier target dates pointing to 2025 and then 2026. Reports around those delays described conflicting demands behind the scenes, and Diesel himself has voiced frustration over a lack of clarity.
Even with the finish line in sight, the ‘Fast’ universe may not be done. Reports say spinoffs in the vein of 2019’s ‘Hobbs & Shaw’ are in the works, and counting that film, ‘Fast Forever’ would be the 12th theatrical entry in the broader series. In other words, the “final” mainline film may not be the last time audiences see the franchise.
That context makes the car-casting tease even more telling. For a series that built its identity on garages, drag strips and family barbecues, going back to basics could be a way of closing the circle. Whether Diesel’s photos hint at a nostalgic return to the franchise’s roots or just a new batch of showstopping rides remains to be seen.
With preproduction apparently moving forward, the next milestones will be casting announcements and a start date for filming. Fans will be watching to see which of the franchise’s longtime stars return, and whether any surprises, like the long-rumored return of Paul Walker’s Brian O’Conner, are officially confirmed. For now, that remains unconfirmed.
Until then, the garage photos serve as a reminder that the franchise’s engine is still running. A teaser that centers on the cars rather than the characters may seem small, but for ‘Fast & Furious’ fans, it’s the most promising sign yet that the road to ‘Fast Forever’ is open.
