Some athletes treat Halloween as a night off from being the center of attention. Victor Wembanyama treats it as a second game day, with the arena tunnel serving as his runway. After a quiet year, the San Antonio Spurs star has brought the tradition back in a big way.

The habit started when he was a rookie, and it has built a loyal following ever since. Each appearance relies on the same trick of using his towering 7-foot-4 frame to turn a familiar character into something unsettling or striking. Fans now treat his Halloween arrival as a must-see part of the NBA calendar.

This year, Victor Wembanyama showed up at Frost Bank Center on Saturday dressed as Geralt of Rivia from ‘The Witcher‘, ahead of the Spurs’ game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The look included a long silver wig, a flowing black cloak and a sword strapped across his back. In the short hallway clip, he stands tall beneath an exit sign while a photographer crouches to capture the moment.

Reports describe him moving through the tunnel without cracking a smile, which suits the stoic monster hunter. The Spurs shared video of the entrance, introducing him by the character’s name. Fans online quickly focused on the sheer scale of the cloak and the oversized prop sword.

The choice is far from random. Wembanyama has described himself as a fan of science fiction and fantasy, and reports say ‘The Witcher’ is his favorite book series. He has said he has read 7 of the books and feels as though he knows the characters like friends or family.

He has also spoken about why the story works for him, describing it as both an epic fantasy and a study of human psychology and emotion. That mix of swords, monsters and moral gray areas gives the costume real meaning rather than just a punchline. It also gives the franchise a very high-profile new fan moment.

This is the third Halloween-themed arrival of his NBA career, though it comes after a pause. He skipped the ritual last season because the Spurs did not have a game on the holiday. Before that, he wore a Slender Man-inspired outfit as a rookie in Phoenix, and then went as No-Face from ‘Spirited Away’ in Utah.

The results on the court have been strong too. The Slender Man night ended in a 1-point win over the Suns, with 18 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks. The No-Face night produced 25 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists, 5 steals and 5 blocks in a win over the Jazz.

Wembanyama was not the only Spur in costume. Rookie Taris Reed Jr. recreated Jim Halpert’s three-hole-punch outfit from ‘The Office’, and De’Aaron Fox dressed as Buzz Lightyear from ‘Toy Story’. Fox’s family completed the theme, with his wife as Bo Peep and their kids as Woody and Jessie.

Keldon Johnson reportedly went with a cowboy look again. Together, the group turned a routine arrival into a full team celebration. It also gave the Spurs plenty of social media content on a night when the league has no official festivities.

The timing is interesting for the franchise as well. Liam Hemsworth took over as Geralt from Henry Cavill in the fourth season, and all 8 episodes of that run are available to stream on Netflix. The fifth season has been confirmed as the final chapter, with filming reported to have wrapped last October.

Netflix has not announced a premiere date for that last season, according to current coverage. That makes a viral Geralt moment from a basketball star a nice bit of free promotion while fans wait. Whether it nudges anyone toward the books or the show is hard to say, but it certainly keeps the character in conversation.

Reaction has leaned heavily on humor about his proportions. Some viewers joked that the cloak made him look like several people stacked together, while others said the sword appeared bigger than they were. Many also praised the effort, pointing to the wig, the sword and the all-black outfit as signs he committed fully.

That mix of laughter and admiration has followed all 3 of his costumes. Slender Man was creepy, No-Face was oddly charming, and Geralt is simply cool. It is hard to argue he has not built one of the most consistent holiday streaks in sports.

With 3 distinct looks behind him, the guessing game for next year has probably already started. His taste for fantasy and sci-fi suggests plenty of options remain, though he has not hinted at any. For now, the Geralt entrance stands as the latest high-water mark.

Whatever he picks, it will likely draw the same mix of awe and jokes. And if the Spurs keep winning, his Halloween fits may become as closely watched as his box scores.

Which character should Victor Wembanyama dress up as for Halloween next year?
