Marvel has spent years finding new ways to put its heroes in front of fans, from billboards to theme park takeovers. Lately, the studio has been turning whole city skylines into screens. A recent Marvel drone show in South Korea is the latest example, and it came with a surprise appearance from Black Widow.

The event was tied to a bigger promotional push, with Halloween night giving the studio a perfect backdrop. Costumes were already in the air across the world, and fans were primed for spooky and superhero-themed surprises. Seoul’s riverside parks turned out to be an ideal stage for it.

Footage from the show features Black Widow in a mid-leap pose, rendered in red and purple-blue lights above the Seoul skyline. The figure is drawn with remarkable detail, including a red-lit head, flowing hair and a clear sense of motion, and the city’s glowing towers sit just beneath her. It is one of the more graceful images to come out of the performance.

The appearance stands out because early coverage of the event focused on other characters. Pre-show reporting named Iron Man, Thor and Doctor Strange among the heroes expected to appear. Black Widow’s cameo adds a fan-favorite name to that list.

Seoul’s city government staged the performance as a “Marvel Special” at Ttukseom Hangang Park, working with The Walt Disney Company Korea. It used 2,000 drones, the largest number the city has ever deployed for a Han River show. The 15-minute, music-synchronized display began at 8:30 p.m. on Halloween and was free to watch.

It also served as the final drone show of the year for the city. Seoul launched these performances in 2023 as part of an effort to turn the Han River into a nighttime attraction. The first 5 shows of this year’s season drew 125,358 visitors, according to city officials, which nearly doubled normal foot traffic along the waterfront on show nights.

The moment that has dominated online conversation is a sequence that moved from Thanos to Iron Man and then to Doctor Doom. Reports say Thanos appeared first, complete with the Infinity Gauntlet, before shifting into Iron Man with Robert Downey Jr.’s face emerging in the lights. The drones then reformed as Doctor Doom, with Vision and Scarlet Witch also appearing in the display.

That choice makes sense given the studio’s current focus. Downey was announced as the new villain Doctor Doom in July 2024, with the Russo brothers returning to direct ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. The film is scheduled to open in the United States on December 18, 2026, and the drone show doubles as a countdown clock.

The evening was not limited to the sky. Before the performance, visitors could explore a ‘Doomsday’-themed photo zone inspired by Doctor Doom’s throne and stained-glass imagery. A costume parade and other activities rounded out the program.

City officials also paired the event with local food and experience programs, and they put extra safety staff in place because Halloween crowds were expected. Separately, Korea hosted a Marvel Run in Inje County the same day, with decorated tracks and limited-edition medals for finishers. Together, the events gave fans a full day of celebration.

Seoul’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Marvel Drone Show Turns Thor Into Steve Rogers Wielding Mjölnir

The Marvel show follows another Disney collaboration earlier this year. In May, a Star Wars special used 2,000 drones over Jamsil Hangang Park. Seoul also staged a show built around ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ in September of last year, using 1,200 drones to draw characters from the Netflix film alongside city landmarks.

That history shows how popular franchise-themed drone shows have become for the city. Studios get a giant, shareable image for social media, while Seoul gets crowds and tourism. The Marvel night appears to have delivered on both counts, with clips spreading quickly online.

Black Widow’s presence carries extra weight for longtime fans. Coverage of the franchise’s biggest crossover events notes that the character sacrificed herself in ‘Avengers: Endgame’. Seeing her return in the sky, even as a glowing outline, feels like a small tribute to that history.

There is no official word on whether she will play a part in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, and the show itself offers no clues on that front. For now, the image works as a nostalgic nod rather than a plot hint. Fans should treat it that way while waiting for more concrete news.

With roughly 7 weeks until the film arrives, the studio has plenty of time to find more creative ways to promote it. The Seoul show suggests that large-scale spectacles will remain part of the strategy. Whether another city gets a similar display is still unknown.

For now, the Black Widow clip stands as one of the prettier highlights from the night. It shows that even in a show built around a villain, the heroes still get their moments in the spotlight.

Which Marvel character would you most like to see featured in the next giant drone show?
