Dave Bautista’s ‘God of War’ Kratos Transformation Just Hit a Major Number
Few casting changes have reshaped a TV production as abruptly as the one behind Prime Video’s live-action ‘God of War’. What began as a straightforward adaptation of one of gaming’s most celebrated franchises turned into a high-stakes game of musical chairs. The central question became whether any actor could physically embody the Ghost of Sparta.
The series, which has received a two-season order, follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they journey to spread the ashes of Faye, their wife and mother. Callum Vinson plays Atreus. The role of Kratos, though, has been anything but stable.
Bautista officially closed his deal to play Kratos, replacing Ryan Hurst, who suffered an on-set biceps injury that required surgery. The deal closed on August 20, and Hurst reportedly tore a bicep during a stunt roughly 4 months into filming. Reports indicated at least 4 episodes featuring Hurst would need to be reshot.
Hurst had also done serious prep work. He gained approximately 40 pounds of muscle to play the famously enormous Spartan warrior. That set a high bar for his replacement.
Bautista was not starting from a bulked-up place, either. In 2024, he said he had slimmed to roughly 240 pounds, down from 315 pounds for ‘Knock at the Cabin’. Reports said he had deliberately moved away from the enormous muscular frame he carried during his wrestling career. Now he is reversing course.
The latest update is a quick video in which Bautista shows off just how far he has come. The clip reveals that he has gained 20 more pounds of muscle for the role and now tips the scales at 250 pounds, with the number splashed across the screen. It is a short, 8-second flex, and fans are certain to dissect every frame of it.
The timeline makes the progress more impressive. On September 3, Bautista said he was 3 weeks into weight training again and had 2 more months to get to where he needed to be. He was 57 at the time of that post. Judging by the new clip, the work is paying off.
Fan reaction to the transformation has been enthusiastic. One commenter on an earlier update said the beast had been unleashed. The reaction to his casting was also largely very positive.
There is still a gap to close, at least on paper. One estimate suggested a gain of around 40 pounds from his 2024 weight would take him to roughly 280 pounds, similar to the mass Hurst reportedly built. That figure is speculative, and the production has not confirmed a target weight for him.
Timing matters here, too. Bautista’s comments suggested Prime Video would restart production in November. Another report described his progress as right on schedule for an October restart. With cameras expected to roll again soon, the 250-pound milestone arrives right when the production needs it.
The series follows the most recent ‘God of War’ games, with Kratos battling gods from the Norse pantheon while raising his son. That story demands a Kratos who looks as if he could crush a mountain, and Bautista is steadily building toward that look. No release date has been announced for the series yet.
Whether 250 pounds is the finish line or just another checkpoint, the clip answers one of the biggest doubts that followed the recast. Bautista is bulking up for the role, and he is doing it quickly. The next question is how the fully transformed Kratos will look once the cameras start rolling again.
