‘God of War Laufey’ Gets Pushed Back as Faye’s Afterlife Adventure Needs More Time

Few PlayStation franchises have reinvented themselves as boldly as Santa Monica Studio’s Norse saga. After years of following Kratos, the series is now handing the spotlight to someone new, and ‘God of War Laufey‘ has been one of the most talked-about PS5 projects since its debut. Fans have been counting down the days, which makes any change to the calendar sting.

The excitement started at the June State of Play, where the game closed out the show with roughly 20 minutes of gameplay. Faye, voiced again by Deborah Ann Woll, leads a journey through the Everywhen, an afterlife for the gods where deities from multiple mythologies clash. Players got a look at faster, more aerial combat built around a legendary sword and soul-based powers, along with hostile figures like Sekhmet and Begtse.

Then came a surprise at San Diego Comic-Con in July, when creative head Cory Barlog revealed a February 16, 2027 launch date. That news came with confirmation that a Kratos-led God of War game will follow and connect directly to this one. Pre-order editions were detailed in September, and everything looked locked in.

Now, that schedule has changed. Santa Monica Studio announced on November 4 that the game has been delayed by 3 months to May 20, 2027. The studio said the extra time will go toward the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential.

In its statement, the studio thanked fans for the excitement surrounding Faye’s journey through the Everywhen since the June reveal. It said it does not take for granted the trust placed in the team to deliver an extraordinary experience worthy of the community’s passion. The message closed with an appreciation for patience and a promise to share more updates soon.

Notably, the studio did not point to any specific development problem. As is typical of big-budget delays, the explanation is broad and reads like a request for more polish rather than a sign of trouble. Existing pre-orders, including the Collector’s Edition, are expected to roll over to the new date.

The move also reshapes a very busy release window. February 2027 had been shaping up as a packed stretch, with ‘Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis’, ‘Persona 4 Revival’, ‘Fable’ and ‘Metro 2039’ all landing within roughly 2 weeks of each other. Stepping out of that pile-up means ‘God of War Laufey’ no longer has to fight for attention during one of the most congested periods on the schedule.

For PlayStation, the game is among its biggest first-party releases of the year ahead, so a few extra months may be a worthwhile trade. Physical collectors are also affected, since Santa Monica Studio confirmed a disc release at a time when Sony is moving toward ending physical media production.

Fans of the franchise will recognize this pattern. ‘God of War Ragnarök’ was originally slated for 2021 before moving to 2022. That history shows the team has been willing to take extra time before when it believed a game needed it, which may calm some of the nerves around this latest shift.

The stakes feel especially high this time because the project marks a major shift for the series. Putting Faye at the center of the story, with her own combat style and a new mythological setting, is one of the biggest changes since the franchise moved from Greek to Norse mythology. A rushed launch would be a risky way to introduce that new direction.

With the new date set for May 20, 2027, the studio says it will be back soon with further updates. Fans can expect more details about the Everywhen and its gods as the game approaches release, along with a clearer look at how this story ties into the upcoming Kratos-led entry. For now, the biggest takeaway is simple: the wait is longer, but the team is betting that it will pay off.

How do you feel about God of War Laufey being delayed to May 20, 2027?
