Robert Carlyle is set to play Sherlock Holmes in the second season of “Watson” on CBS, Variety has reported. Carlyle will appear as the famous detective in a recurring guest role alongside Morris Chestnut, who stars as Dr. John Watson.

The new season’s cast also includes Eve Harlow, Peter Mark Kendall, Ritchie Coster, Inga Schlingmann, and Rochelle Aytes. Earlier, Randall Park appeared as Holmes’ rival, Professor James Moriarty.

Carlyle is the latest actor to take on the role of Sherlock Holmes on CBS. Before him, Johnny Lee Miller played Holmes for seven seasons on the show “Elementary.”

Series showrunner Craig Sweeny shared his excitement about Carlyle joining the cast. He said, “We are thrilled to have the mighty Robert Carlyle join the cast of ‘Watson’ in Season 2. The man has played iconic roles in projects like ‘Trainspotting,’ ‘The Full Monty,’ and ‘28 Weeks Later’… and now he steps into the shoes of the most iconic detective of all, Sherlock Holmes. When Watson’s best friend and former partner makes a shocking reappearance in his life, Watson is forced to confront their shared past—and a secret that may lie buried within Watson’s own body.”

“Watson” was renewed for a second season in March. The show centers on Dr. Watson, who opens a clinic specializing in rare and unusual conditions after Holmes’ apparent death.

According to the official description, “With his eyes fixed on the future, Watson faces an unexpected twist when Sherlock Holmes, who was presumed dead, resurfaces, forcing him to confront a buried secret from his past—one that lies hidden within his own body.”

Season 2 of “Watson” will premiere on October 13 at 10 p.m. ET on CBS, with episodes available for streaming the following day on Paramount+. Executive producers include Craig Sweeny, Morris Chestnut, Larry Teng, Shäron Moalem MD, PhD, Aaron Kaplan, and Brian Morewitz. The series is produced by CBS Studios.
