After becoming one of the biggest box office hits of the year, the live-action Lilo & Stitch is finally heading to Disney+. The movie will start streaming on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, according to Deadline.

That means it’s getting a massive 124-day theatrical run after first opening in theaters on May 23.

The film crossed the billion-dollar mark earlier this summer, making $1.025 billion worldwide. That makes it the second-highest-grossing movie of 2025 so far, and also the most successful live-action and animation hybrid film in history. It’s the first of its kind to pass $1 billion at the box office.

Lilo & Stitch is directed by Dean Fleischer Camp. It’s a remake of Disney’s 2002 animated classic, with some parts inspired by its sequels and spin-off TV series.

Newcomer Maia Kealoha stars as Lilo Pelekai, while Chris Sanders, who wrote and directed the original, returns to voice Stitch. The cast also includes Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Hannah Waddingham, Courtney B. Vance, and Zach Galifianakis. Some original cast members, like Amy Hill, Tia Carrere, and Jason Scott Lee, return in different roles.

The road to making the film began back in 2018 when Disney started developing the remake. After some changes in writers and directors, Fleischer Camp took over in 2022, with Chris Kekaniokalani Bright writing the script.

Filming took place in 2023 and early 2024. Dan Romer composed the score, and Industrial Light & Magic handled the visual effects.

The movie had its world premiere at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on May 17, 2025, and opened wide on May 23. It quickly broke records over Memorial Day weekend. According to Fandango, it was the biggest first-day ticket pre-sale of the year for a PG-rated movie, beating A Minecraft Movie, Snow White, Dog Man, and Paddington in Peru. It was also the second-biggest pre-seller for a Disney remake, only behind The Lion King.

Reviews from critics have been mixed to positive. On Rotten Tomatoes, 72% of critics recommend it, with the site saying, “Recapturing the adorable charm of the original if not quite matching its rambunctious sense of imagination, Lilo & Stitch emerges out of the crate as one of the better live-action remakes of a Disney classic.” Metacritic gives it a score of 53 out of 100, which means mixed reviews. But audiences love it, CinemaScore gave it an “A,” and PostTrak says 90% of viewers rated it positively, with 81% saying they would definitely recommend it.

Disney has already confirmed a sequel is in the works, with Sanders writing the script. But for now, fans will finally be able to watch Lilo & Stitch at home when it lands on Disney+ this September.
