Apple TV+ is preparing to debut its new psychological thriller series Cape Fear, and the first reviews from critics are already giving viewers a good idea of what to expect.

The upcoming eight-episode miniseries currently holds a 73% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 15 reviews, suggesting that most critics have responded positively to the latest adaptation of the classic story.

Created by Nick Antosca, Cape Fear is based on John D. MacDonald’s novel The Executioners and follows in the footsteps of the famous 1962 and 1991 film versions. This new take stars Javier Bardem as Max Cady, a dangerous ex-convict who is released from prison after serving 17 years. Once free, he begins targeting Tom and Anna Bowden, the married attorneys connected to his past. Using his knowledge of the legal system, Cady carefully works his way into their lives while staying one step ahead of punishment.

The series features an impressive cast alongside Bardem. Amy Adams plays Anna Bowden, while Patrick Wilson stars as her husband Tom. Lily Collias and Joe Anders play their children Natalie and Zack. The supporting cast also includes CCH Pounder, Jamie Hector, Margarita Levieva, Ron Perlman, Ted Levine, and Patrick Fischler.

Many critics have singled out Bardem’s performance as one of the show’s biggest strengths. Several reviewers believe he successfully makes the iconic role his own while still respecting previous versions of the character.

Writing for Heaven of Horror, Karina Adelgaard praised the actor’s work, saying, “As much as I loved Robert De Niro as Max Cady in the 1991 movie, Javier Bardem manages to completely make this character his own.” She also noted that the series includes subtle nods to earlier adaptations that longtime fans may appreciate.

Hunter Ingram of TheWrap was equally impressed, writing, “Bardem is giving a masterclass in reinterpreting a classic like Cady.” He added that the extended runtime allows the actor plenty of opportunities to fully explore the character’s darker side.

Other critics highlighted the show’s suspenseful storytelling. Peter Martin of ScreenAnarchy described the series as a world where trust is constantly tested, writing, “Lies, secrets, and repercussions run rampant in Cape Fear, where everyone’s motives are always suspect.”

Randy Myers of the San Jose Mercury News also had positive things to say, calling the show “a breathless experience” that finds new ways to approach familiar material while still honoring what came before.

Not every review has been positive. Sean Burns of WBUR’s Arts & Culture offered one of the more critical takes, calling the series a “rotten score” review and saying that some of the characters’ actions stretched credibility too far.

Still, the overall reaction has been favorable. Critics from IndieWire, The Hollywood Reporter, Radio Times, Discussing Film, and several other outlets have praised the show’s atmosphere, directing, performances, and tension-filled storytelling.

With its strong cast, dark premise, and positive early reviews, Cape Fear appears poised to become one of Apple TV+’s biggest thriller releases of the year. Fans won’t have to wait much longer to see whether the series lives up to the praise when all eight episodes arrive on June 5.
