Big career nights tend to bring out the people closest to an actor, and Christopher Abbott’s latest one was no exception. His new Netflix limited series, ‘East of Eden’, held its New York premiere at The Plaza Hotel this week, and the red carpet was full of the cast and creators behind the Steinbeck adaptation. Among the guests was someone who had not been seen at a public event in months.

That guest was Aubrey Plaza, and the timing made the night special. The couple’s story has unfolded largely out of the spotlight, from a quiet relationship that surfaced in mid-2025 to a pregnancy confirmed this spring. The premiere gave fans a rare chance to see her out in public again.

On Wednesday, Sept. 30, Plaza attended the ‘East of Eden’ premiere, her first public event since she and Abbott welcomed their first child, a daughter, in the last week of July. E! News shared the news, and Just Jared noted that the premiere marked her return after the birth. The 42-year-old wore a long black coat over a sheer black top and a matching black skirt.

She and Abbott, 40, both walked the carpet but did not pose together for photographers. Instead, Abbott celebrated the premiere with cast members including Florence Pugh, Mike Faist and Joseph Zada, according to Us Weekly. Abbott plays Adam Trask in the series, which arrives on Netflix on Oct. 1.

The couple has kept details of their family life private. Neither Plaza nor Abbott has publicly announced the baby’s name or exact birth date, and E! News noted that they have not spoken publicly about welcoming their child. Plaza’s representative confirmed the pregnancy to People on April 7, and a source said at the time that the baby was due in the fall.

The birth became public in August. TMZ reported on Aug. 9 that Plaza had welcomed a baby girl and published photos of her carrying the newborn in New York after attending Abbott’s final performance in the Broadway revival of ‘Death of a Salesman’. The baby arrived earlier than the fall due date mentioned in April.

Plaza and Abbott have a long professional history. They first worked together in the summer of 2019 on the indie film ‘Black Bear’, which premiered at Sundance in January 2020. They later reunited for the off-Broadway play ‘Danny and the Deep Blue Sea’, which ran from October 2023 to January 2024.

Romance rumors did not surface until July 2025. Their first official red carpet appearance as a couple came at the Tony Awards on June 7, when Abbott was nominated for Best Featured Actor in a Play for playing Biff Loman in ‘Death of a Salesman’. Plaza joined him in a black-and-white Chanel dress that showed her baby bump.

Plaza first broke out as April Ludgate on ‘Parks and Recreation’, and her career has since taken in ‘Ingrid Goes West’, ‘Emily the Criminal’, ‘The White Lotus’ and ‘Megalopolis’. Earlier this year, she starred in ‘The Accompanist’, directed by Zach Woods and co-starring Susan Sarandon, which premiered at the Tribeca Festival on June 4. She also served as a producer on that film.

For now, her focus appears to be on family. Several outlets described her summer as a private one spent adjusting to motherhood, and the premiere was a chance to celebrate a major moment for her partner. Abbott, meanwhile, is promoting a high-profile project that has drawn strong early reviews for the cast, especially Pugh.

‘East of Eden’ stars Pugh as Cathy Ames, with Abbott and Mike Faist as the Trask brothers, and it spans generations from the Civil War through World War I. The series is based on John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel and was written by Zoe Kazan. All 7 episodes are now streaming.

Fans were quick to celebrate the sighting, and the couple’s low-key approach has only added to the interest. Whether Plaza shares more about her new chapter remains up to her. For now, a quiet red carpet appearance was a warm reminder of how much support she and Abbott have for each other.

What do you think of Aubrey’s low-key return to the spotlight?
