‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Star Vanessa Kirby Confirms She’s Wrapped Filming on Apple’s Sci-Fi Thriller ‘Liminal’
Vanessa Kirby has had one of the busier stretches of her career lately, bouncing from Marvel’s cosmic-scale storytelling straight into an entirely different kind of ensemble project. Fresh off starring as Sue Storm in ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ and with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ still ahead of her, the actress has spent much of this year quietly working on something considerably stranger and more grounded.
That project is ‘Liminal‘, Apple Original Films’ sci-fi action-thriller from director Louis Leterrier, built around an ensemble that also includes Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Tom Pelphrey, Franka Potente and Tracy Letts. The film is based on the AWA graphic novel ‘Telepaths’, a story imagining a world where a tenth of the population suddenly gains telepathic abilities following a global electromagnetic disturbance.
Kirby confirmed that production has officially wrapped, marking the news herself in a heartfelt post shared to her Instagram. She reflected on what she called a beautiful, crazy few months alongside co-stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Tom Pelphrey, thanking Apple TV and Leterrier directly, along with the film’s New York crew for keeping the set joyous even through demanding stretches of shooting.
That intensity lines up with what Leterrier himself teased just weeks earlier. Speaking during a Q&A for his Netflix film ‘The Last House’ hosted by Collider’s Steve Weintraub, the director revealed he’d shot the final scene of ‘Liminal’ that same day. “I shot the last scene of my next movie today. Somebody died,” he said, describing the project as “very interesting sci-fi” while confirming the stacked cast, according to ScreenRant.
The source material ‘Liminal’ draws from centers on newly telepathic Boston police officers who find themselves targeted by a faction led by a wrongfully convicted prisoner attempting to escape a world where their powers make them marked targets. Justin Rhodes, who previously wrote ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’, penned the screenplay, giving the project a genre pedigree that lines up well with Leterrier’s own background directing large-scale action fare like ‘Fast X’ and ‘Now You See Me’.
The cast has continued to expand since the project was first announced, with Paul Sparks and Ava Threat joining more recently alongside the previously confirmed lineup. Production reportedly ran from May through August of this year, filming across New York City and Morocco, which likely explains the physically demanding shoot Kirby referenced in her post about being upside down for days on end.
With Leterrier confirming that ‘Liminal’ will be his next release following ‘The Last House’, anticipation is already building for how this ensemble cast will handle a story built around mass telepathy and institutional distrust. No official release date has been set yet, though the film isn’t expected to premiere until sometime in 2027.
Between Kirby’s heartfelt wrap message and Leterrier’s own excitement about the project’s “interesting” sci-fi elements, ‘Liminal’ is shaping up to be one of the more intriguing entries in Apple’s growing slate of original films.
