Disney is reportedly planning a new addition to one of its most iconic franchises, The Lion King, according to industry insider Daniel Richtman.

The latest installment, Mufasa: The Lion King, hit theaters on December 20, 2024. It earned $723 million worldwide and ranked as the sixth-highest-grossing movie of 2024, despite receiving mixed reviews from critics.

The Lion King franchise has been a massive success since the original 1994 animated film directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff.

Its popularity has led to multiple projects, including direct-to-video sequels and prequels, a 2019 photorealistic remake, a 2024 prequel/sequel, a television film sequel, two spin-off series, several educational shorts, video games, merchandise, and a Broadway musical that became the third-longest-running show in history. The musical won six Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

The franchise mainly follows a pride of lions ruling the Pride Lands, with Simba as the central figure. The original films drew heavily from William Shakespeare’s works and have been praised for their storytelling and themes. Overall, the franchise has earned over $11.6 billion, making it one of Disney’s most lucrative properties.

With the success of Mufasa: The Lion King, fans are eager to see what direction Disney will take with this next project. Richtman’s claim has not yet been officially confirmed by Disney, but it has sparked excitement among fans of the series.

The Lion King franchise has proven it can reinvent itself successfully while keeping the core story and characters intact. A new installment could continue that legacy and introduce the Pride Lands to a whole new generation. What do you think about another Lion King film? Share your thoughts in the comments.
