‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Star Dies as Heartbroken Fans Flood Social Media With Tributes
Anthony Stewart Head, the actor best known for playing Rupert Giles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died at the age of 72. According to a report from the BBC, Head passed away after complications related to pneumonia.
For many television fans, Head will always be remembered as Giles, the loyal Watcher and mentor to Buffy Summers. Throughout the series, he became one of the show’s most beloved characters, known for his wisdom, dry humor, and fatherly bond with Buffy. His performance helped make Buffy the Vampire Slayer one of the most popular fantasy series of its era.
News of his death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans around the world who grew up watching the series. Many have shared memories of how much the character of Giles meant to them and how Head’s performance became a defining part of the show.
Head’s daughters, Daisy and Emily Head, released a statement following his passing.
“It will forever be an honor and a privilege to be his daughters, and to have witnessed firsthand the impact both he and his work have had on so many. We know how dearly he will be missed by friends, colleagues, and fans of the shows he was in. He loved his job very much, and he always considered himself incredibly lucky, to have been able to work alongside such exceptionally talented people, in such wonderful productions, across a career that spanned several decades.”
Although Buffy remains his most famous role, Head enjoyed a long and successful career that stretched across television, film, theater, radio, and music. In recent years, many viewers recognized him from the hit comedy series Ted Lasso. He also appeared in the fantasy drama Merlin and starred in the cult musical film Repo! The Genetic Opera.
The actor was also closely associated with The Rocky Horror Show. Over the years, he played the iconic role of Dr. Frank N. Furter in several stage productions. His recording of “Sweet Transvestite” was even released as a single in 1991.
Before becoming a household name through Buffy, Head gained attention in the United States through a popular series of Nescafé commercials. Not long afterward, he landed the role that would change his career forever.
Head appeared as a regular cast member on Buffy the Vampire Slayer during its first five seasons. After returning to the United Kingdom, he continued making guest appearances throughout the show’s final years. There were once plans for a Giles-focused spinoff series called Ripper, which was announced by Buffy creator Joss Whedon, but the project never moved forward.
His career was also deeply connected to his family. Anthony Head came from a performing background, and his older brother, Murray Head, found success both on stage and in music. Murray originated the role of Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar and later scored an international hit with “One Night in Bangkok.”
The loss comes only months after the death of Head’s wife, Sarah Fisher, who passed away in December 2025 at the age of 61.
Anthony Stewart Head leaves behind a remarkable legacy built across decades of entertainment. While he played many memorable roles throughout his career, for countless fans he will always be remembered as Rupert Giles, the librarian who helped guide a generation of heroes through the darkness.
