Activision and Infinity Ward have officially revealed “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.” The game is set to launch later in 2026 on PC and modern consoles. A reveal trailer has already been released, giving players their first look at the story, setting, and tone of the new entry in the long-running franchise.

The trailer shows a global military conflict with multiple locations around the world. These include cities such as New York, Mumbai, Paris, and areas in Korea. The story appears to focus on rising tension involving a North Korean faction. While full plot details have not been confirmed, familiar characters like Captain Price and Ghost are shown, and there is clear tension between them. The trailer also hints at events connected to previous storylines in the Modern Warfare series.

The campaign is expected to continue the cinematic style the series is known for, with large-scale missions and global conflict. Some early details suggest a more grounded military tone compared to recent entries. However, specific story beats remain unclear, and developers have not fully explained how returning characters fit into the timeline.

One of the biggest confirmed details is the release date. “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4” will launch on October 23, 2026. Season 1 content is expected to follow shortly after launch, continuing the game’s live-service model. The timing places the release just ahead of other major entertainment launches later in the year, making it a key fall release for Activision.

The game will release on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and Nintendo Switch 2. A major change this year is that the game will not be available on older consoles like PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. This marks a shift toward current-generation hardware only, allowing developers to focus on improved visuals and performance.

Gameplay changes are also a major part of the reveal. “Modern Warfare 4” will include a mix of new and returning multiplayer features. The game will launch with around a dozen maps, along with large-scale 32 versus 32 battle maps that include vehicles. Gunfight mode is also returning with expanded player options, including larger team sizes in certain variants.

One of the new features is a map called “Kill Block,” which changes layout dynamically and can shift through hundreds of possible configurations each match. This is designed to keep gameplay unpredictable and fresh. It will launch as a Gunfight map first, with plans to expand it into other modes later.

A new system called “Gunny” has also been introduced. It allows players to skip traditional Gunsmith customization and instead use automatic weapon builds based on playstyle. At the same time, a new unified Create-A-Class system combines operators, weapons, equipment, and killstreaks into one loadout system.

Progression is also changing. Players will be able to choose between regular leveling and a Classic Prestige system. The Classic Prestige option resets progression in exchange for special rewards, similar to older Call of Duty games.

Movement mechanics have also been adjusted. The game removes the Omnimovement system seen in previous entries. However, players will still have advanced movement options like sliding and improved mantling. Developers describe the movement speed as faster than Modern Warfare II but more controlled than Modern Warfare III.

Several quality-of-life features are also included. Map voting is returning, along with Theater Mode. A new UI system is being introduced with cleaner menus and improved navigation. The game will also support offline campaign play, including offline shader compilation.

A major highlight is the return of DMZ mode. This extraction-style gameplay first appeared in Modern Warfare II but was later scaled back. In “Modern Warfare 4,” DMZ is being expanded significantly. It will include dynamic weather, changing mission objectives, and a more developed structure. Developers are aiming to compete in the growing extraction shooter genre.

Warzone is also undergoing major changes. The game will be removed from older consoles as support for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One ends. It will transition fully to current-generation systems alongside the launch of the new game’s season integration. Exact timing has not been fully confirmed, but it is expected around November 2026.

There are also changes coming to weapons and content sharing. Some older content may be removed or “vaulted” as the new game integrates into Warzone. This is part of a larger effort to streamline the ecosystem across Call of Duty titles.

Pre-order editions for “Modern Warfare 4” include special operator skins and bonus packs. These skins represent different countries and are part of the Vault Edition content. Additional cosmetic packs will also be available at launch and in other Call of Duty titles.

While not all details have been revealed yet, Activision has confirmed that a beta test for “Modern Warfare 4” will take place before launch. More gameplay footage, multiplayer breakdowns, and DMZ details are expected to be shared closer to release through official Call of Duty channels.
