Christopher Judge Explains Why He Turned Down Playing Live-Action Kratos, and His Reasoning Makes Total Sense

For fans who spent years watching Christopher Judge breathe life into Kratos across two critically acclaimed ‘God of War‘ games, the idea of finally seeing him embody the character in live-action felt like an inevitable next step. That dream got even closer to reality once Amazon’s television adaptation began taking shape, fueling years of fan campaigns hoping Judge would make the jump from motion capture to full physical performance.

That anticipation only grew once the search for a live-action Kratos officially began, with Judge himself acknowledging online enthusiasm for the idea at various points along the way. Behind the scenes, though, the actor was wrestling with a much more complicated decision than fans realized, one that ultimately led him away from the role entirely.

Speaking at a recent Fan Expo Canada panel attended by Collider, Judge revealed that he had genuinely no interest in taking on the physically demanding live-action version of Kratos. “I didn’t want to do it,” he said. “I didn’t want to, at 62 years old, work 16-to-18-hour days. I didn’t want to be dieting constantly; I didn’t want to be working out constantly.”

That decision came after what Judge described as something of an emotional rollercoaster once the search for a live-action lead first began. Despite briefly reconsidering after a conversation with his grandson, he ultimately concluded that his body and mind simply weren’t ready to take on a role that had proven physically demanding even decades earlier, during his time on ‘Stargate SG-1’ in his 30s and 40s.

Amazon’s ‘God of War’ series eventually cast Ryan Hurst, known for ‘Sons of Anarchy’ and ‘The Walking Dead,’ as the live-action Kratos, a casting choice that carried its own franchise connection since Hurst had previously voiced Thor opposite Judge’s Kratos in 2022’s ‘God of War Ragnarök.’ Judge himself publicly embraced the choice, expressing genuine respect for Hurst and confidence that he would honor the character fans have grown to love.

That plan hit an unexpected setback in June, when Hurst suffered a torn bicep while performing a stunt on set, an injury serious enough to require surgery and a lengthy recovery period. Rather than delay production for months while Hurst healed, producers made the difficult call to recast the role entirely, ultimately landing on Dave Bautista, known for his work in the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ franchise and ‘Dune,’ to step into the part.

Judge weighed in on that recasting during the same Fan Expo Canada panel, reflecting on Bautista taking over as the older, more grizzled version of the character. Given Judge’s own extensive physical performance background across roles ranging from ‘Blade Runner 2049’ to ‘Knock at the Cabin,’ his perspective on the demands of the role carries real weight, even as he ultimately chose to step away from pursuing it himself.

Despite passing on the live-action opportunity, Judge hasn’t ruled out further involvement with the Kratos character in other formats. He’s continued voicing the role in game media and has openly discussed his hopes for where the franchise’s story might head next, including expressing interest in seeing a future installment explore Egyptian mythology.

Judge has also previously voiced his own interest in playing Marcus Fenix from the ‘Gears of War’ franchise in a hypothetical live-action adaptation, suggesting his reluctance toward the ‘God of War’ role stemmed less from disinterest in genre projects broadly and more from the specific physical demands this particular production required.

For fans who spent years hoping to see Judge’s take on Kratos brought fully to life, his candid explanation offers a clear, understandable reason why that dream never came to pass, even as the character continues finding new life through Bautista’s take on the aging god of war.
