Some premieres feel like a formality, a quick red carpet walk before everyone heads inside for the movie. Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey‘ turned its London debut into something closer to a full-scale event, gathering nearly its entire ensemble on one stage before a single frame had played for the audience.

The film’s world premiere took place Monday night at the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square, part of a rollout that has treated this adaptation of Homer’s ancient epic like one of the biggest theatrical events of the year. A giant wooden Trojan horse loomed outside the venue, and inside, a screen behind the stage displayed the film’s title against a striking image of Odysseus mid-battle.

That screen also carried a pointed reminder for anyone in the room hoping to break news early. Onstage text informed the crowd that all reviews were strictly embargoed until Wednesday, July 15 at 5pm BST, while making clear that social media reactions were welcome in the meantime.

It was in front of that backdrop that Nolan brought out his full principal cast for a rare group bow, with Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, and more lined up together as the director addressed the room himself. Photos and footage from the moment quickly circulated online, with fans noting how rare it is to see a cast of this size assembled together for a single curtain call before the movie even starts.

Nolan used the stage time to reflect on what the London premiere meant to him personally, describing the experience of watching a film he made fill the same screen he grew up watching movies on as a kid. He told the crowd that he had spent years dreaming of one day making something that could fill that exact Leicester Square screen, calling the night truly incredible, given everyone who came together to make ‘The Odyssey’ happen.

He also took a moment to thank the cast directly, along with the thousands of crew members who worked on the production, as well as NBCUniversal chairman Donna Langley. Nolan described the entire filmmaking process as the thrill of a lifetime, a sentiment that seemed to land with a crowd already primed for a big night.

The size of the ensemble on that stage reflects just how sprawling this adaptation of Homer’s poem really is. Beyond the leads playing Odysseus, Penelope, and their son Telemachus, the gathered cast included Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, John Leguizamo, Mia Goth, Benny Safdie, and Samantha Morton, among others, who filled out the film’s take on gods, suitors, and soldiers.

For several of the British cast members, including Holland, Pattinson, and Goth, the London stop carried extra weight as a hometown premiere. The event doubled as the official kickoff for what is expected to be an extensive global promotional tour ahead of the film’s July 17 theatrical release.

What are you most looking forward to in The Odyssey?

With reviews still under wraps until later in the week, the assembled cast photo and Nolan’s onstage remarks have become the first real glimpse the public has gotten of the mood surrounding this project, and early signs suggest the excitement in that room was not just for show.
