DC’s ‘Absolute Batman’ Series Officially in the Works With Scott Snyder Leading the Way
DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation are taking one of Batman’s newest comic book versions to the screen. The companies have officially announced that an animated series based on Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta’s popular comic book Absolute Batman is in development.
The announcement was made during a joint presentation at the Annecy International Film Festival, where Warner Bros. Animation president Sam Register revealed new details about the upcoming project. DC Studios co-chairmen and CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran also appeared on stage during the event to discuss the future of DC animation.
Snyder, who created the comic series, will take a major role in bringing the adaptation to life. He will serve as executive producer and showrunner, while Dragotta will join the project as a producer. Their involvement means the creative team behind the original comic will have a direct connection to the animated version.
Absolute Batman offers a very different take on the legendary superhero. Instead of focusing on Bruce Wayne as a billionaire crime fighter, the story presents Batman as a working-class hero who faces a much tougher reality. The series explores a version of the Dark Knight who must fight against corruption, powerful enemies, and a world where doing the right thing is harder than ever.
According to the description of the series, Absolute Batman is about proving that “even in an era of wealth, power and corruption, one good person can change the world.”
The comic launched in 2024 and quickly became one of DC’s biggest recent successes. The series has reportedly sold more than six million copies, with its first collected volume reaching its 11th printing. The popularity of the comic helped make it an obvious choice for expansion into animation.
The Absolute Batman announcement was only one of several major reveals from DC and Warner Bros. Animation at Annecy. The companies also confirmed new projects, including the adult animated series Joker: Laugh Riot and a new children’s series focused on Superman’s famous dog, Krypto.
Joker: Laugh Riot will explore a different side of Batman’s greatest enemy. The story begins after Batman is killed, forcing Joker to search through Gotham’s criminal world to find out who was responsible. However, his journey pushes him into unexpected territory as he starts questioning his own identity without his longtime rival.
The series will be executive produced by Jim Krieg and directed by Yasuhuro Aoki, who previously worked on projects including ChaO and The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.
DC also revealed plans for an untitled Krypto project, which will follow Superman’s loyal dog as he interacts with a group of struggling criminals. Executive produced by C.H. Greenblatt, the animated series will focus on Krypto’s attempts to change the lives of those around him, even when they do not want his help.
The Annecy presentation also included updates and sneak peeks for several other DC animated projects, including upcoming seasons of Creature Commandos, Batman: Caped Crusader, My Adventures with Superman, Mister Miracle, DC Super Powers, and Starfire.
With Absolute Batman now moving forward, DC continues to expand its animated universe with more experimental stories and fresh versions of its biggest characters. Fans of the comic will be watching closely to see how Snyder and Dragotta’s unique version of the Dark Knight translates to the screen.
