DC’s Absolute Universe Just Unveiled Its Terrifying New Take On Cyborg, and Fans Are Losing Their Minds

DC’s Absolute Universe has spent the past two years quietly becoming one of the publisher’s most successful modern experiments, taking beloved heroes and rebuilding them from the ground up in darker, more grounded versions of their classic selves. What started with reinvented takes on Batman and Superman has since expanded into a growing roster of reimagined icons, each one designed to feel unrecognizable at first glance while still carrying the emotional core of the original character.

That expansion has been fueled largely by strong sales and even stronger fan reactions, with recent additions like Absolute Green Arrow reportedly posting record-breaking numbers for the entire line, even surpassing Absolute Batman himself. That success has only fueled speculation about which character might be next in line for the Absolute treatment, with names like Cyborg, Raven, Beast Boy, Aquaman, and Supergirl all circulating as likely candidates.

That speculation appears to have finally paid off. DiscussingFilm shared a first look at Absolute Cyborg, showing a striking new design revealed during Comic-Con, credited to the account heyitsjennalynn. The image shows a young Victor Stone standing alongside a nightmarish, insectoid mechanical form covered in red glowing eyes and tangled wiring, a dramatic departure from the more traditionally armored cyborg design fans are used to seeing across DC media.

The reveal comes as part of DC’s larger Absolute Universe programming at this year’s convention, which has served as a major showcase for the imprint’s expanding lineup. DC’s panel schedule for the event included a dedicated Absolute Universe panel gathering key creators behind the line, including Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta from ‘Absolute Batman,’ Hayden Sherman from ‘Absolute Wonder Woman,’ Jeff Lemire from ‘Absolute Flash,’ and Che Grayson from ‘Absolute Catwoman,’ among others.

That panel was billed as offering the first hints of justice closing in on ‘Absolute Batman,’ suggesting the reveal of new characters like Cyborg may tie into a larger narrative thread running through the wider universe rather than existing as a standalone announcement. The Absolute line has consistently used these kinds of interconnected reveals to build anticipation for where its expanding roster of heroes and villains might eventually collide.

Cyborg’s design in particular stands out for how far it strays from convention, trading the character’s usual sleek, high-tech aesthetic for something far more organic and unsettling. The design’s insectoid, multi-eyed silhouette suggests this version of the character may be positioned closer to body horror territory than the heroic, tech-forward interpretation audiences have grown used to across other DC properties.

That kind of drastic reinvention has become something of a signature for the Absolute Universe as a whole. The imprint has built its identity around flipping power dynamics and visual expectations entirely, often placing its heroes in working class or otherwise diminished circumstances while depicting its villains and antagonistic institutions as disturbingly well-resourced.

With Absolute Cyborg now joining the ranks of characters like Absolute Batman, Absolute Superman, Absolute Wonder Woman, and Absolute Green Arrow, DC’s alternate universe initiative shows no signs of slowing its expansion anytime soon. Given the imprint’s track record of turning unconventional redesigns into some of its biggest sales successes, this latest reveal may end up being one of the most talked-about additions yet.
