DC’s New Series, ‘Immortal Legend Batman,’ Will Be Inspired by Japanese Tokusatsu Series

Regardless of whether you know the term tokusatsu, you probably know what it stands for. It is a term that describes series that heavily rely on the usage of bombastic special effects. The genre is attributed to special effects director Eiji Tsuburaya, and is now used to describe shows such as Godzilla, Gomera, Kamen Rider, Ultraman, or Power Rangers.
Now, going back to the topic at hand, you probably know that Batman’s stories were, at times, inspired by Japanese culture, but this is the first time that we’re getting a proper tokusatsu Batman story.
Namely, DC Comics is launching a new series – Immortal Legend Batman – which is going to debut soon and in this report, you will find out everything you need to know about the series.
This six-issue series will be co-written by Kyle Higgins and Mat Groom, who has experience with such stories, with covers and designs from Justice League Unlimited‘s Dan Mora. The first issue is set to appear on August 27, 2025.
“Batman is fiction’s greatest hero, and we wanted to find a way to take everything that’s so great about him—his immense determination, resilience and selflessness—and explore it in a totally new way,” Groom said to the press. “So, we’re taking Batman to the stars, turning him into a wandering hero, exploring humanity’s final frontier… and searching out deadly threats he inadvertently released upon the galactic community.“
The story itself is going to be set in the distant future, a future in which humans have colonized the universe. But, some odd futuristic technologies has awakened some dangerous creatures known as “Shadows”.
These creatures travel to various human colonies and attack the people there. Immortal Legend Batman, Immortal Legend Robin, and Immortal Legend Nightwing unite to save the universe from these beings.
“Certain projects are the perfect storm of timing, idea and creative team. Immortal Legend Batman has been years in the making, dating back to stunning designs that Mat and I first saw from Dan Mora. Obviously, we have a love and appreciation for Tokusatsu, and it’s influence on our books like Radiant Black and Inferno Girl Red,” Higgins told the press about the project. “The opportunity to bring that love to a very unique version of Gotham, with very unique versions of these characters, with Mat, Erica, Igor, and Becca, along with our editor Matt Levine, who we worked with on Power Rangers, makes this beyond a perfect storm.“
