James Gunn and Peter Safran have a formidable task ahead of them as they take on a fresh start in the DC Universe (DCU). A new chapter in the DCU will be called “Gods and Monsters,” and a brand new roster of movies and TV shows has been revealed. There’s plenty to be excited about, from the standalone Superman movie titled Legacy and Creature Commandos animated series to the live-action series set in Themyscira titled Paradise Lost. One more project that has been announced sees Supergirl in the main role. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow focuses on a fresh new take on the character, and we’d like to use this opportunity to tell you all about the potential release date, cast, and more.

DC’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is a live-action movie based on Tom King’s comic of the same name. It will follow a much darker take on Supergirl. Not much is known about the project currently, and there are no revealed cast members to speak of, but what we do know, based on Gunn’s comments, is that Supergirl might be in theaters sometime in 2027, 2 years after Superman: Legacy hits the theaters in 2025.

Now that we’ve covered the most basic info that we currently have, it’s time to analyze the upcoming Supergirl movie in a bit more detail. Let’s check it out.

DC’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is a darker new take on the character

James Gunn and Peter Safran recently revealed five upcoming movies and five upcoming series, both animated and live-action, that will be set in the same shared universe. Among the announced projects are a standalone Superman movie titled Superman: Legacy, live-action series titled Paradise Lost, Live action series focusing on Viola Davis’ character titled Waller, and many others.

All shows and movies will be connected, set in the shared universe, and according to the comments made regarding the Creature Commandos series, the actors will be shared as well. One project that seems especially promising is the newly announced Supergirl standalone movie “Woman of Tomorrow.”

A new Supergirl movie was announced a while back, and the filming was supposed to start back in 2020. However, the project seemed to be stuck in an uneasy situation regarding the development. Supergirl is also set to appear in the upcoming Flash movie, with Sasha Calle playing the character. This newly announced movie, however, seems to be unrelated to the older rumors. It’s rather a new start for the character in the DCU.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow plot details

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be based on the comic written by Tom King. The limited series ran from 2021 to 2022 and painted Supergirl in a much darker light than we’re used to seeing her in. During the destruction of her home planet Krypton, Supergirl was stuck on a piece of the planet that drifted away. She grew up in a harsh environment with a lot of mental trauma to unpack, considering that she has seen everyone she loves die.

She was sent to Earth to protect her cousin Superman, but it seemed that Superman no longer needed her when she turned up on Earth. Kara Zor-El soon finds herself without any sort of goal or aspirations. She seems to be forever stuck in Superman’s shadow until she is contacted by a strange alien girl set on the path of revenge. She wants to employ Kara’s help to realize her goals by any means necessary.

SUPERGIRL WOMAN OF TOMORROW

This version of Supergirl is messed up, has a lot of emotional baggage, and it’s much more battle-hardened than we’re used to. James Gunn confirmed as much when he commented on the movie.

“In our story, we have Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by incredibly loving parents. Kara was on Krypton. She was on a piece of Krypton that drifted away from the planet, and she lived there for the first fourteen years of her life in a horrible situation where she watched everyone around her die. So, she’s a much harsher and more f*cked up Supergirl than you’ve been used to thus far.”

We’re not sure to what extent the movie will follow the storyline that it was based on, but in any case, prepare for a new version of Supergirl.

DC’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow cast

Not much is known about the cast of the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie at this moment. We know that Supergirl as a character will make an appearance in the upcoming Flash movie and that Sasha Calle will be playing her. However, it has not been specified whether Sasha will also return to play Kara Zor-El in the upcoming standalone movie.

We know that Gunn and Safran are striving to create a shared and connected universe with the characters (and actors) that the fans recognize and are able to connect with.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow potential release date

The release date for the Supergirl standalone movie hasn’t been revealed as of yet. James Gunn, however, commented on the potential release window in the context of the shared and connected universe and the role the video games will going to play in it.

“It’s more like we’ll have the Superman film come out, then maybe two years later, we have the Supergirl movie coming out. So, what’s the story in between there? Is there a Krypto game that we can play that comes in between them? Something that’s still set in the world with these characters but is its own thing. ”

Since Superman is set to be released in 2025, based on Gunn’s comments, we might expect Supergirl to hit theaters anytime in 2027. But once again, nothing is confirmed, and not much is known except the fact that the movie is coming out and the general plot outline.
