Disney+ Just Announced Its Next Big Horror Hit: ‘Afterlife With Archie’

Riverdale spent seven seasons pushing the boundaries of how dark a small town teen drama could get, dabbling in murder mysteries, cults, and even brief flirtations with the undead. But even at its strangest, the show never fully committed to the one story its own creator had wanted to tell since the very beginning.

That story is finally getting its moment. Disney+ has officially greenlit a live-action adaptation of ‘Afterlife With Archie,’ the acclaimed horror comic that reimagined the wholesome town of Riverdale as a zombie-ravaged nightmare, with the series set to premiere around Halloween 2027.

The show will follow what happens when a supernatural spell from a certain teen witch backfires, unleashing an army of the possessed dead upon Riverdale, forcing Archie and his friends to fight for survival while testing the friendships, romances, and loyalties that have always held them together.

For Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who co created the original comic alongside artist Francesco Francavilla, this project represents the culmination of a dream he has carried since long before Riverdale ever premiered. Aguirre-Sacasa said this was the comic book that started it all, explaining that before there was a Riverdale or a Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, there was Afterlife With Archie, which he collaborated on with Francavilla, someone he called the best horror artist in the business.

That connection runs deep for Aguirre-Sacasa personally. Even back during his Riverdale days, he would frequently talk about how badly he wanted to adapt Afterlife With Archie for television, and while Riverdale did briefly touch on zombies and the undead, it never came close to fully embracing the comic’s horror roots.

This new series also marks a reunion between Aguirre-Sacasa and longtime collaborator Greg Berlanti, the prolific producer behind projects like ‘The Flash’ and ‘You.’ Berlanti and producing partner Sarah Schechter expressed excitement about reuniting with Aguirre-Sacasa on the project, calling it a chance to revisit some of their favorite characters in a unique and thrilling way, while thanking Archie Comics for trusting them to bring the various Archie stories to life once again.

That partnership has already produced two major Archie adaptations. Aguirre-Sacasa previously created ‘Riverdale’ for The CW, which ran for seven seasons, along with the spinoff ‘Katy Keene’ and the Netflix horror series ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,’ also based on one of his own Archie Comics horror titles.

Since Archie and his friends remain teenagers in this new interpretation, none of the previous actors from ‘Riverdale’ or ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ are expected to return in their earlier roles, though casting details have not yet been announced. Disney executives have emphasized that, despite the horror elements, the show is being built around the same emotional core that made the earlier Archie adaptations resonate with audiences.

Disney Kids and Family president Ayo Davis described the project as more than just zombies, framing it around the friendships, loyalty, and humanity that make Riverdale worth fighting for, and predicting fans will fall hard for this new version of the gang while admitting they might scream a little too.

This also represents the first Archie Comics adaptation to land on the platform it was originally sold to develop for, giving the franchise its first true home at Disney after years of bouncing between Fox, The CW, and Netflix. Given how well both ‘Riverdale’ and ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ performed for their respective networks, expectations are already high for this next chapter.

With a Halloween 2027 target and one of television’s most successful teen drama teams back at the helm, ‘Afterlife With Archie’ looks poised to bring genuine horror back to Riverdale in a way the franchise has never fully attempted before.
