Disney Reportedly Eyes Major Comedian to Lead New ‘Inspector Gadget’ Film
The Inspector Gadget franchise appears to be gearing up for a comeback after years of quiet development and unfinished reboot attempts. Reports of a new live-action film in early talks at Disney suggest that the studio is once again interested in bringing the classic 1980s character back to the big screen.
With modern audiences and nostalgia-driven projects performing well, the timing feels right for a revival of the bumbling cyborg detective and his world of spy-themed chaos.
Will Ferrell is reportedly in talks to play Inspector Gadget in a new live-action Disney film. The news comes from industry insider Daniel Richtman, who shared early casting information about the project. Nothing has been officially confirmed by Disney yet, but the report has already sparked interest among fans.
According to the same report, Sean Anders is also attached to direct the film. Anders is known for comedy movies like “Daddy’s Home,” which suggests the new Inspector Gadget project may lean heavily into humor.
The Inspector Gadget franchise is not new to audiences. It first started in 1983 as an animated TV series created by DIC Entertainment. The story follows a clumsy but well-meaning cyborg detective named Inspector Gadget. He is sent to stop the evil plans of Dr. Claw and his organization known as M.A.D.
Even though Gadget is the main character, he is not very good at solving cases. Most of the time, he accidentally gets things right. The real heroes are actually his niece Penny and her dog Brain. They secretly solve the crimes while Gadget takes the credit without realizing it.
Over the years, Inspector Gadget has grown into a full franchise. It includes several animated series, video games, and films. The character became popular because of its mix of comedy, spy action, and simple storytelling that worked for younger audiences.
The franchise was already turned into live-action movies before. The first film came out in 1999 from Walt Disney Pictures and starred Matthew Broderick as Inspector Gadget and Rupert Everett as Dr. Claw. In that version, Gadget was shown as more competent than in the original cartoon, and Dr. Claw’s face was revealed, which was different from the animated series.
A sequel called “Inspector Gadget 2” followed in 2003. It continued the story but made several changes to characters and tone. Some cast members from the first movie did not return.
There have also been many animated spin-offs and reboot attempts over the years. Some projects never made it past early development. Others were planned but later canceled, including darker or more modern versions of the story. Despite this, the franchise has remained active in different forms over the decades.
Now, with a new film possibly in development, Disney may be trying to bring Inspector Gadget back for a modern audience. If Will Ferrell is cast, the tone could shift even more toward comedy, since he is known for playing exaggerated and silly characters in films like “Elf” and “Anchorman.”
The report from Daniel Richtman has not been confirmed by Disney or the filmmakers involved. However, the combination of Ferrell and director Sean Anders has already led to speculation that the studio may be aiming for a family-friendly comedy reboot.
For now, the project remains in early talks. There is no release date, and no official cast has been announced. But if it moves forward, it could become the first major Inspector Gadget film in years and introduce the character to a new generation of viewers.
