‘Dune: Part Three’ Will Hit IMAX Screens Four Days Before Its Official Release

Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi trilogy has become one of the defining cinematic experiences of the decade, and ‘Dune: Part Three‘ arrives with expectations to match. Picking up nearly two decades after Paul Atreides seized control of the Imperium, the film follows Paul as a ruthless emperor forced to confront old allies, new threats, and the reappearance of his long-lost love, all while a sweeping conspiracy closes in around him.

With Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and Florence Pugh returning alongside a cast that includes Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides and Jason Momoa reprising his role through a clone of Duncan Idaho, anticipation for the film has only grown since its first teaser materials began circulating earlier this year. That excitement has been compounded by the film’s high-stakes release date collision with ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ a box office showdown fans have already dubbed “Dunesday.”

That competitive pressure appears to be part of why Warner Bros. is giving ‘Dune: Part Three’ an early head start. According to ScreenRant, IMAX 70mm insider screenings are officially set to begin Monday, December 14, a full four days ahead of the movie’s wide theatrical release. Initial showtimes for that early date are limited to six theaters and only in the rare IMAX 70mm format, with the selection expanding the following day, December 15, when digital IMAX screenings become available as well.

Neither Warner Bros. nor IMAX has publicly explained the reasoning behind the early screening window. Industry speculation points to a desire to build word-of-mouth buzz ahead of the film’s clash with Marvel’s Avengers team-up, especially since ‘Dune: Part Three’ holds an IMAX exclusivity window that Marvel’s ‘Doomsday’ won’t have access to.

That exclusivity stems from a scheduling agreement giving ‘Dune: Part Three’ three full weeks of exclusive access to IMAX screens, a major advantage in a marketplace where demand for premium large-format screenings has surged following the success of ‘Sinners’ and ‘The Odyssey.’ Without access to IMAX, Marvel Studios has instead rolled out its own certified premium format called Infinity Vision for ‘Doomsday,’ an attempt to offer a comparable large-screen experience without the IMAX branding.

The film’s connection to IMAX runs deeper than simple scheduling advantages, too. Director Denis Villeneuve has spoken about shooting much of the movie on 70mm film for the first time in years, a choice reflected in the fact that ‘Dune: Part Three’ is only the second film, after ‘The Odyssey,’ to use IMAX’s newer, lighter camera systems. He told Primetimer that desert sequences were kept on digital cameras specifically to preserve the “brutality of the digital IMAX” look.

Tickets for the December 14 insider screenings are expected to go on sale August 18, according to early reports, giving fans a narrow but clear window to plan ahead. That timeline mirrors an earlier surprise ticket rollout back in April, when limited opening-weekend seats for the film’s traditional IMAX 70mm release sold out almost instantly across 19 global locations, including the BFI in London and IMAX Melbourne.

With ‘Dune: Part Three’ set to open wide across North America on December 18 and internationally beginning December 16, the film’s IMAX advantage gives Warner Bros. a meaningful head start heading into one of the busiest box office weekends of the year. Whether that early access proves decisive against Marvel’s competing blockbuster remains to be seen, but Villeneuve’s trilogy finale is clearly positioning itself to make the most of every available advantage.
