‘Dutton Ranch’ Season 2 – Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser Reveal What’s Next After the Shocking Finale
Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser are ready to return to the world of Dutton Ranch, but season 2 will bring some major changes behind the scenes. After the first season ended with a dramatic cliffhanger, the two stars opened up about the future of the Yellowstone spinoff, the new showrunner, and how the series will continue without Taylor Sheridan writing every word.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Reilly and Hauser discussed the pressure of moving forward with Dutton Ranch after leaving behind the original Yellowstone era. The first season ended with Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler facing a dangerous new threat after discovering they were betrayed by their business partner Beulah Jackson, played by Annette Bening. The finale also left fans with a major cliffhanger when their adopted son Carter, played by Finn Little, was kidnapped.
The emotional ending made season 2 a must-watch for fans, and Paramount+ quickly confirmed that the show would return. However, the series will have a new creative leader, with Benjamin Cavell replacing Chad Feehan as showrunner.
For Kelly Reilly, continuing Beth Dutton’s story without Taylor Sheridan writing her dialogue was a major challenge. She admitted to The Hollywood Reporter that she was unsure how the character would work in a new creative environment.
“I was very uncertain of what this would be without his words. I didn’t know if it was gonna work. I didn’t know if she was going to work,” Reilly said.
She explained that she felt like part of Beth had to change in order for the character to grow. “It was like a part of the character had to die in order for me to begin her again,” she said.
Reilly believes the experience helped her understand Beth in a new way. She said the character has become more mature while still keeping the strength and attitude fans love. Cole Hauser also said the success of season 1 was a huge relief after months of hard work. He told The Hollywood Reporter that the cast and crew put everything into making the show.
“It was not easy doing the show. We put our hearts and souls into this. It was a long shoot. It was hot; it was cold. Everything was thrown at us,” Hauser said. The actor added that seeing how fans reacted was the most rewarding part. “What I love most is when the audience speaks,” he said.

Looking ahead, both actors are excited about working with Benjamin Cavell. Hauser revealed that someone he deeply trusts recommended Cavell after working with him on SEAL Team. He said their early conversations made him confident about the direction of season 2.
“I cannot wait for this new iteration of Ben and his team of guys that he hires, along with David Glasser and the people who are involved, and to really sink our teeth into what this next show is going to be,” Hauser said. Reilly also praised executive producer and director Christina Voros, calling her a key part of the creative team. She said she believes the show has a strong group of people guiding the next chapter.
One of the biggest storylines for season 2 will be Beth and Rip’s fight to save Carter. Reilly said she enjoys seeing the couple protect someone they love because that brings out the best in them.
“I love Beth and Rip having to care about something. That really means something. And Carter is that. They’re at their best when they’re fighting for somebody else, always,” she said.
