Every Character Who Actually Survives the Dance of the Dragons in ‘House of the Dragon’

The Dance of the Dragons is shaping up to be one of the bloodiest chapters in all of Westerosi history, and ‘House of the Dragon‘ has spent two seasons building toward a war that leaves almost no one unscathed. Dragons burn, sons are murdered, and the Iron Throne changes hands more than once before the smoke finally clears.

Given how brutal the source material gets, it can be genuinely hard to keep track of who actually makes it out alive. Below is a rundown of the main characters confirmed to survive the Dance of the Dragons, based on George R.R. Martin’s ‘Fire and Blood’ and how the show has adapted their arcs so far.

Aegon III Targaryen Survives the Dance of the Dragons as The Boy King

Aegon III ends up as one of the two major survivors from Rhaenyra’s side of the family, and he is also the one who inherits the Iron Throne once the fighting stops. He ascends to the throne after the war and rules for 26 years. He is only ten years old when he becomes king, a detail that makes his eventual reign feel less like a triumph and more like a long, grinding recovery.

Historically, Aegon III has been called The Unlucky King, The Dragonbane, and The Broken King because of everything he goes through. Those nicknames alone say a lot about what kind of victory this actually is for House Targaryen.

His personal life does not get much easier after the crown lands on his head. He marries Aegon II and Helaena’s daughter, but she dies just two years into the marriage, and Aegon III himself eventually dies from consumption after the last dragon in Westeros also dies during his reign. It is a fitting, if grim, bookend to the war that put him on the throne in the first place.

Viserys II Survives Alongside His Older Brother

Viserys II is the other major survivor from Rhaenyra’s branch of the family, and he shares the distinction of being one of the only sons of the fallen queen to live through the entire conflict. Along with Aegon III, he is counted among the major survivors of the war.

Compared to his brother, Viserys II’s post war story gets far less screen time in most retellings, but his survival matters enormously for the Targaryen line. With so many of Rhaenyra’s children killed before the fighting even ends, having two sons walk away means the dynasty does not collapse entirely.

That continuity is really the whole point of the Dance of the Dragons as a story. The war is less about who wins and more about who is left standing to rebuild, and Viserys II is one of the few reminders that Rhaenyra’s side did not lose everything.

Alicent Hightower Barely Makes It Through the Dance of the Dragons

Alicent Hightower survives, but just barely, and her survival comes with a heavy asterisk attached. She remains Public Enemy Number One to Rhaenyra’s supporting faction even after Rhaenyra is murdered and Aegon II reclaims the Iron Throne for a second time.

Her situation only grows more precarious once the fighting technically ends. She is confined by Ser Tyland Lannister, the Hand of the King under Aegon II, inside Maegor’s Holdfast. The Blacks, still furious over her role in the war, never fully forgive her, even as the realm tries to move past the conflict.

Her survival does not last especially long once the dust settles either. Alicent Hightower dies from winter fever roughly two years after the war ends. It is a quiet, almost anticlimactic end for a woman who spent decades shaping the politics that led to the Dance in the first place.

Corlys Velaryon Outlives Nearly His Entire Family

Few characters embody the cost of the Dance of the Dragons quite like Corlys Velaryon. He survives the war and goes on to act as regent for King Aegon III while his granddaughters Baela and Rhaena are the only members of his immediate family to live through the conflict alongside him.

His path to survival is not exactly clean either. His involvement in a plot with Larys Strong to poison Aegon II nearly gets him executed on Cregan Stark’s orders, and it is only through Baela and Rhaena defending him that he avoids that fate. That near miss makes his survival feel less like luck and more like a last minute rescue.

Even after the war, peace does not exactly find him. He spends the rest of his life carrying survivor’s guilt, dedicating himself to protecting what remains of his family’s legacy before eventually dying of old age and being buried at sea. For a man once defined by ambition and exploration, it is a strikingly subdued ending.

Baela and Rhaena Targaryen Carry the Family Forward

Daemon’s twin daughters, Baela and Rhaena, end up among the most consequential survivors of the entire war, even though they do not sit on the Iron Throne themselves. Baela aligns with the Black faction alongside her twin sister, supporting their half brother Jacaerys and their grandmother Rhaenyra throughout the conflict.

Baela’s survival is anything but guaranteed at points. During the war’s closing stages, she attacks Aegon II on her dragon Moondancer, and although Moondancer is smaller than the injured Sunfyre, Baela presses the attack until Moondancer is killed and she herself suffers multiple broken bones and severe burns, but lives. She later marries Alyn Velaryon and becomes an influential figure during Aegon III’s reign.

Rhaena’s war looks very different from her sister’s, but it is no less important to the family’s survival. She spends much of the Dance away from the front lines, safeguarding younger members of House Targaryen, and eventually bonds with Morning, the last dragon to hatch in Westeros. Though she never achieves the fame of other dragonriders, she survives the war and helps preserve the Targaryen bloodline before later marrying into House Hightower.

Together, the twins end up doing more to hold the family together after the fighting than almost anyone else who lives through it. Their survival is quieter than Aegon III’s or Alicent’s, but arguably just as vital to what House Targaryen becomes afterward.
