Fede Álvarez Confirms ‘Alien: Romulus’ Sequel Is Being Written, Hints at Production Starting Soon

Fede Álvarez has confirmed that a sequel to Alien: Romulus is now being written, and fans of the franchise have every reason to be excited. During his guest appearance on the horror podcast Marea Nocturna, the director opened up about where things currently stand with the next chapter in the Alien universe.
Álvarez, known for directing Evil Dead (2013), Don’t Breathe, and more recently Alien: Romulus, spoke with the podcast’s hosts, Desirée de Fez, Jordi Sánchez-Navarro, Xavi Sánchez Pons, and Ángel Sala, about his career and what comes next. When asked about the Alien sequel, Álvarez didn’t hold back.
“I’m currently in the period between movies, where I mostly wear the writer’s hat, and I always try to do this,” he said. “To imagine that I won’t direct the movie, and that I just have to write a story. I’m in this process now. We’re writing a sequel to Romulus, and we’re in the middle of that. When I say, ‘We,’ I mean I and Rodo [Sayagues], my co-writer in all my movies. It’s what we’re doing every day right now.”
Although no official title has been revealed yet, Álvarez’s comments confirm that the sequel is moving forward and not just stuck in rumors. That’s a big deal, especially since Alien: Romulus became the second highest-grossing movie in the franchise and was the biggest horror box office hit of 2024.
The strong reaction from both fans and critics made it clear that there was more story to tell.
Álvarez also hinted at when production might begin. At the end of the podcast, when asked if he would be attending the next Sitges Film Festival in Spain this October, he said it might be tough to make it.
“Hopefully, by that time, I should be in pre-production [for the sequel], but if the production is set in Europe, then I should go,” he said.
The podcast episode also touched on Álvarez’s early days making short films in Uruguay, including his 2009 breakout short Panic Attack!, which got the attention of Sam Raimi and led to him directing the Evil Dead remake. That moment launched his Hollywood career.
Now, more than a decade later, Álvarez is deep in the world of one of sci-fi’s most famous franchises. And if everything stays on track, the next Alien movie could be closer than we think. The news from Marea Nocturna gives fans something to look forward to, another terrifying trip into space, written by the same team who gave us Romulus.
