Before Marvel took over, 20th Century Fox had been trying to reboot the Fantastic Four after their 2015 film did not do well. When Disney bought Fox in 2019, Marvel Studios gained control of the characters and announced a new film soon after.
Jon Watts was originally set to direct but left in 2022, and Matt Shakman was chosen to replace him later that year. The script went through several rewrites, and filming took place in England and Spain from July to November 2024.
The movie skips the usual origin story of the Fantastic Four, something that sets it apart from previous versions. Matt Shakman described Reed Richards, aka Mister Fantastic, as “the most scientifically intelligent person on the planet,” comparing him to a mix of Steve Jobs and Albert Einstein.
Pedro Pascal, who plays Reed, said what mattered most to him was Reed’s brain rather than his physical abilities.
Vanessa Kirby plays Sue Storm, the Invisible Woman, who is Reed’s pregnant wife and Johnny Storm’s sister. Sue leads a group called the Future Foundation, which has brought peace to the world. Shakman called her “the most emotionally intelligent person” and Kirby mentioned she wanted to include different comic versions of Sue, even the darker “Malice” side, so she wouldn’t be just a typical mother figure.
Ebon Moss-Bachrach is Ben Grimm, also known as The Thing, who has super-strong rock-like skin. He performed the role using motion capture technology, similar to how Mark Ruffalo plays the Hulk. Moss-Bachrach shared that The Thing’s loyalty and sense of family reminded him of a character he played in a TV show.
Joseph Quinn plays Johnny Storm, the Human Torch, who can fly and control fire. Quinn wanted his version of Johnny to be less careless with people’s feelings and more self-aware, while still keeping the character’s humor and bravado.
John Malkovich and Julia Garner also have important roles. Garner portrays the Silver Surfer, Galactus’s herald, using motion capture. She said the character moves “elegantly, like a dance.” Ralph Ineson’s Galactus is described by Shakman as a “humongous, 14-billion-year-old, planet-devouring cosmic vampire.” Ineson doesn’t see Galactus as evil but more like a god who is just doing what he does naturally.
The movie will also feature the robot H.E.R.B.I.E., voiced by Matthew Wood, who helps Reed Richards. A baby actor plays Franklin Richards, Reed and Sue’s newborn son. Other actors like Mark Gatiss, Sarah Niles, and Natasha Lyonne appear, and Robert Downey Jr. is rumored to make a post-credits cameo as Doctor Doom, though Shakman said Doctor Doom is “not a part of [his] film.”
This new Fantastic Four movie promises a fresh take on the classic superhero team, focusing on a vibrant 1960s-inspired world and big cosmic threats without retelling the familiar origin story. The cast and crew seem passionate about making the film stand out in the MCU.
