Flawless Start: See the First 10 Minutes of ‘Mortal Kombat II’ Before Its Digital Release
IGN has shared an exclusive early look at the first 10 minutes of Mortal Kombat II, giving fans a preview ahead of its digital release on June 9 and its Blu-ray release on July 28. The footage is described as a very intense red band opening, which means it includes strong violence and is aimed at adult viewers.
The film is based on the long-running fighting game series created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. It continues the story that began in Mortal Kombat and is the fourth film in the overall movie series. The sequel builds on the idea of a brutal interdimensional tournament where fighters from Earthrealm must battle warriors from Outworld.
The story follows Johnny Cage, a martial arts movie star who gets pulled into a much bigger world than he expects. He is recruited by Raiden and Sonya Blade to join Earthrealm’s defenders. Together, they face the threat of the Outworld Empire and its ruler, Shao Kahn, while also getting help from Kitana, the princess of Edenia. The setup is bigger in scale than the first film and focuses more on the tournament and the larger war between realms.
The movie is directed by Simon McQuoid, who also directed the 2021 film. The screenplay is written by Jeremy Slater. The production brought back many familiar actors while also adding new faces. Returning cast members include Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Lewis Tan, Max Huang, Damon Herriman, Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada. New cast members include Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Martyn Ford, and Tati Gabrielle.
Behind the scenes, the sequel was developed after discussions in 2021 about expanding the franchise. Producer Todd Garner, writer Greg Russo, and director McQuoid explored different directions, including possible spin-off films focused on characters like Johnny Cage and Sub-Zero. By 2022, the project moved forward at New Line Cinema, with Slater writing the script and McQuoid returning to direct again.

Filming started in June 2023 in Australia, but production was interrupted in mid-July because of the SAG-AFTRA strike. Work later resumed in November 2023 and finished in January 2024. The long production schedule gave the team time to refine action scenes and visual effects, which are a major part of the franchise’s style.
Warner Bros. Pictures released the film in theaters in the United States on May 8. The movie had its premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre on April 27. It earned about 128.7 million dollars worldwide from an 80 million dollar budget. Critics gave it mixed reactions, with praise for the action but divided opinions on the story and character focus.
Now, with the IGN exclusive preview of the opening 10 minutes, fans are getting another look at how the sequel starts and how quickly it jumps back into the violent tournament world. The early footage sets the tone for a larger and more aggressive continuation of the story, while also introducing Johnny Cage as a central figure in the fight for Earthrealm.
