Michael C. Hall’s return to television’s most infamous serial killer keeps getting bigger with every casting announcement. Season two of ‘Dexter, Resurrection’ has already built an impressively stacked lineup of villains and returning faces, and the latest addition promises to add another layer of tension to Dexter Morgan’s ongoing hunt through New York City.

The Showtime and Paramount Plus revival has spent the year steadily rolling out casting news for its sophomore season, currently filming in New York. Between Brian Cox stepping into the role of The New York Ripper and Dan Stevens taking on The Five Borough Killer, the show has been building toward what looks like its most villain-heavy season yet.

That lineup just grew once again. Gabriel Luna has officially joined the cast in a guest-starring role as Ray Ballard, a serial killer operating under the ominous alias The Sleepy-Eyed Stranger, according to Variety, who confirmed the casting news alongside details of his character’s eventual showdown with Hall’s Dexter Morgan.

Details on exactly how Ballard and Dexter’s paths cross remain under wraps for now, but the character himself has already carved out a small piece of Dexter lore.

According to the franchise’s established mythology, the Sleepy-Eyed Stranger previously turned up as one of the many serial killers catalogued in the extensive case files kept by another character in the earlier season, meaning Luna’s addition brings a name long referenced within the show’s universe into the spotlight for the first time.

Luna arrives with a resume that has made him one of the more in-demand character actors working today. He recently earned praise, including a best supporting actor win at the Critics Choice Celebration of Latino Cinema and Television, for his role as Detective Rafael Tovar in Peacock’s ‘Devil in Disguise, John Wayne Gacy’. He is also known for his work on HBO’s ‘The Last of Us’, where he is set to return for season three, along with roles in ‘Agents of SHIELD’ and Netflix’s ‘FUBAR’.

His casting joins a season two roster that continues to expand in scope. Uma Thurman is set to reprise her role as Charley, while Krysten Ritter returns as a guest star following her turn as Mia LaPierre in the first season. Bokeem Woodbine and Nona Parker Johnson are also joining the cast as Capt. Mixon and Fiona Mixon respectively.

Behind the scenes, the series remains under the guidance of original ‘Dexter’ architect Clyde Phillips, who developed ‘Resurrection’ and continues serving as showrunner alongside Hall, who executive produces in addition to starring. The show marks a continuation of the franchise that first debuted back in 2006, following Dexter Morgan’s double life as a forensics expert who secretly hunts down other killers, a premise that ended its original run in 2013 before being revived through both ‘New Blood’ and now ‘Resurrection’.

Fans following the production closely have also picked up on set footage hinting at where the story might be headed emotionally. Behind-the-scenes clips captured earlier this year showed Hall and Thurman filming scenes together around New York City, fueling speculation that Charley and Dexter’s dynamic could take a more personal turn as the new season unfolds.

With filming currently underway and a genuinely stacked ensemble of killers and returning characters now locked in, season two of ‘Dexter, Resurrection’ looks positioned to raise the stakes considerably from its debut season. No premiere date has been announced yet, but between Cox, Stevens, and now Luna’s mysterious Sleepy-Eyed Stranger, Dexter Morgan may be facing his most dangerous lineup of adversaries in years.
