‘Lanterns’ Cast Weighs in on Whether Spider-Man Could Actually Beat a Green Lantern
Superhero crossover debates have become something of a sport unto themselves, with fans endlessly arguing about which hero from which universe would come out on top in a hypothetical showdown. It’s the kind of playful hypothetical that inevitably makes its way into press interviews, especially when two of the biggest superhero franchises on the planet happen to be dominating pop culture at the same time.
That’s exactly the territory the cast of HBO’s ‘Lanterns‘ found themselves in recently, fielding questions about how their characters would stack up against one of Marvel’s most beloved heroes. The DC series, which follows two intergalactic Green Lantern Corps members investigating a mystery in small-town Nebraska, has spent the past several weeks building buzz thanks to strong reviews and a standout ensemble cast.
When asked directly whether Tom Holland’s Spider-Man could realistically beat a Green Lantern in a one-on-one fight, the cast wasted no time shutting the idea down. Aaron Pierre, Kyle Chandler and Kelly Macdonald all expressed varying degrees of playful disbelief at the notion, with each actor making the case that their character’s cosmic ring-based powers would simply overwhelm anything Spider-Man’s webs and reflexes could offer.
The consensus among the trio leaned heavily toward the idea that Spider-Man, for all his agility and strength, is ultimately grounded in human-scale physics compared to the near-limitless constructs a Green Lantern ring can conjure. It’s a lighthearted exchange, but one that taps into a long-running debate among comic book fans about how Marvel and DC’s respective power scales actually compare when pitted against each other.
Pierre stars as John Stewart, the newest recruit to the Green Lantern Corps, while Chandler plays Hal Jordan, the veteran Lantern often described as a legend within the organization. The two are paired together to investigate a mysterious shooting in a small Nebraska town, a setup that blends cosmic superhero mythology with a grounded, small-town mystery tone reminiscent of shows like ‘True Detective.’
Macdonald joins the cast as Sheriff Kerry, a local law enforcement figure whose path crosses with the two Lanterns as their investigation unfolds. The series also features Nathan Fillion reprising his Green Lantern connection by playing Guy Gardner, alongside a supporting cast that includes Poorna Jagannathan, Garret Dillahunt and Laura Linney in a role connected to the mysterious extraterrestrial elements of the story.
‘Lanterns’ was created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King, with Mundy serving as showrunner for the project. The show premiered on HBO and HBO Max on August 16, and has continued airing new episodes weekly, drawing praise for the chemistry between Pierre and Chandler as the show’s central mismatched partnership.

The timing of this particular debate isn’t exactly coincidental, either. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has been dominating box office conversations of his own this year following the release of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ which has continued to rack up records and box office milestones throughout its theatrical run.
With both franchises enjoying major moments in the spotlight simultaneously, it makes sense that fans and journalists alike would want to see how the two properties’ stars feel about each other’s characters. For the ‘Lanterns’ cast, at least, the answer seems pretty clear: no amount of webbing or wall-crawling is enough to compete with the raw cosmic power of a ring capable of manifesting anything its wearer can imagine.
Of course, these kinds of interspecies, inter-franchise debates rarely have a definitive answer, and fans on both sides are sure to keep the conversation alive regardless of what the actors themselves believe. Still, it’s a fun reminder of just how much crossover appeal both DC and Marvel properties continue to generate, even when the characters in question have never actually shared a screen.
With ‘Lanterns’ continuing its weekly rollout on HBO and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ still riding high in theaters, this particular hypothetical matchup is likely to keep popping up in fan conversations for a while yet.
If Spider-Man fought a Green Lantern one-on-one, who do you think would win?
