Gillian Anderson Just Turned ‘The X-Files’ Into a Real Lego Set, and Even She Can’t Believe It Finally Happened
Nostalgia-driven collectibles have become a booming corner of the toy industry in recent years, with adult fans increasingly willing to spend serious money reliving their favorite shows and movies brick by brick. Few franchises carry the kind of devoted, decades-long fanbase needed to justify that kind of investment quite like a certain cult classic sci-fi series from the 1990s.
That devotion is exactly what finally pushed one long-requested project over the finish line this week. Fans who spent years hoping to see their favorite paranormal investigators immortalized in plastic finally got their answer, and the reveal came with a genuinely special surprise attached.
LEGO has officially unveiled its new Ideas set based on ‘The X-Files,’ and to celebrate the announcement, Gillian Anderson stepped back into the role of Dana Scully for a brand new cinematic promotional short. In the mini-film, Anderson finds herself pulled into a mysterious investigation involving a black box that eventually reveals itself to be filled with LEGO pieces, gradually building into the new set right before her eyes.
The 1,478-piece build recreates several of the show’s most iconic locations, anchored by a detailed version of Fox Mulder’s office alongside a forest clearing complete with a hovering UFO. The set ships with eight minifigures, including Mulder, Scully, Walter Skinner, Mr X, Alex Krycek, Carl Busch, The Flukeman, and a grey alien, giving longtime fans a deep cut lineup that goes well beyond just the two leads.
Anderson herself seemed almost as delighted by the announcement as the fans she has spent decades entertaining. “Seeing myself in minifigure form is both surreal and oddly delightful,” Anderson said in a statement shared by Variety, adding that she considers the whole set a brilliant celebration of the series and cannot wait to display her own tiny Scully figure.
Speaking further about the project, Anderson admitted she genuinely doubted it would ever come together. She told Forbes she had assumed the concept had quietly disappeared over the years, only to be caught off guard when LEGO eventually confirmed the set was moving forward into full production.
The set’s origins trace back more than a decade to LEGO’s Ideas platform, where fans submit their own concepts for official consideration. Australian fan designer Brent Waller originally pitched the concept as part of the platform’s 90s Nostalgia Challenge, describing his own obsession with the show dating back to when he first discovered it as a kid.
Anderson’s connection to the project runs deeper than just a licensing deal. She has spoken about the lasting cultural impact of playing Scully, including the so-called Scully Effect, a documented rise in women pursuing STEM careers that has been credited to her character’s influence on young viewers throughout the 1990s and beyond.
The LEGO Ideas The X-Files set carries a price tag of $199.99 and will be available to LEGO Insiders for early access starting August 1, with general availability following on August 4. Anyone purchasing the main set between August 1 and August 10 will also receive a bonus gift with purchase, a smaller Scully’s Lab set recreating the FBI National Academy classroom complete with its own Scully minifigure in scrubs and a lab coat.
