Netflix has released a new trailer for The Last House, an upcoming sci-fi thriller starring Greta Lee and Wagner Moura. The film tells the story of a family that suddenly becomes trapped inside their own home with no way out. What starts as a strange situation quickly turns into a fight for survival as days turn into weeks, and weeks turn into years.

According to information shared by Netflix’s Tudum, the story follows Jason and Ann, played by Wagner Moura and Greta Lee. One day, they discover that they cannot leave their house. The doors won’t open, the windows can’t be broken, and a mysterious threat outside keeps them from escaping. As rain falls endlessly outside, the family realizes they are completely cut off from the world.

The couple struggles to explain what is happening to their children, Ruth and Graham. As time passes, the children grow older while still trapped inside the house. The movie follows how the family changes over the years as they try to survive under impossible conditions.

Director Louis Leterrier said the situation becomes more difficult as time goes on.

“Food is dwindling, and this family has to rely on each other and try to understand what comes next. What’s locking them in, and how will they survive?”

The movie focuses on both physical survival and the emotional toll of being trapped for such a long time. Greta Lee said she was immediately interested in the project because of its unique idea.

“Growing up, my favorite things to watch and read were survivalist stories with a twist,” Lee told Tudum. “So I was immediately drawn to this story. I love the questions this movie asks about our world and how we choose to live in it. And I was excited about the possibility of asking these questions in a new and entertaining way.”

To make the survival aspects feel realistic, the filmmakers worked with survival expert Megan Hine. She helped the cast and crew develop believable ways the family could stay alive while trapped inside the house for years.

Wagner Moura believes audiences will connect with the story because it deals with family relationships and emotions that many people understand.

“I think people are going to recognize themselves in this film,” Moura said. “Everybody is a parent or son or daughter. We have dysfunctional families or happy families … It goes beyond culture. It’s an animal instinct we all have within ourselves — for protection, love, humor, and conflict, too.”

One of the biggest challenges for the production was creating the house itself. The home plays a major role in the story and changes as the years pass. Production designer Kevin Jenkins built a detailed set that could age along with the characters. Everyday objects inside the house slowly wear down, showing the effects of time and isolation.

Moura was impressed by the work that went into building the set.

“I’ve never seen a set built like that, with all the details and complexities that the house needed,” he said. “It was mind-blowing, the details.”

Leterrier also wanted the movie to feel grounded and realistic. He revealed that much of the film was shot on 35 mm film and relied heavily on practical effects instead of digital tricks.

“I grew up with Steven Spielberg movies,” Leterrier said. “The Amblin movies where the houses were shot on location. There was that texture that just made it feel quite relatable. That was the idea.”

While the house becomes a prison for the family, the danger is not limited to what is waiting outside. As the trailer shows, some of the biggest threats may come from within the walls themselves. The Last House premieres on Netflix on Aug. 7.
