Grey Sloan Memorial has always been a teaching hospital, and this week’s lesson was that perfection doesn’t exist. The ‘Grey’s Anatomy‘ recap and ending explained covers an hour full of risky calls, awkward confessions and one very satisfying job offer. “Slippin’ and Slidin'” aired Thursday on ABC and streams on Hulu on Friday.

The premiere left the hospital short-staffed, with Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver gone and a controversial VIP wing stealing everyone’s attention. It also ended on a cliffhanger, with Simone pregnant and unsure who the father is. Jo had also quit, so the support system at Grey Sloan was thinner than ever.

This week answers some of those questions, starting with how Simone’s secret begins to spread.

Simone slept with both her boyfriend Wes Bryant and her ex Lucas around the same time, so she has no idea who fathered the baby. Blue finds out first, and their conversation is overheard until Wes learns the news. She tells Wes it happened when they weren’t exclusive but doesn’t mention that the other man was Lucas.

Wes panics about becoming a father but stays supportive. Simone has a condition that made getting pregnant naturally nearly impossible, and she calls the baby a miracle. In the end she decides she doesn’t want a baby right now and chooses her career, and Wes tells her he isn’t walking away. Lucas, meanwhile, has no idea what’s going on.

Bailey is studying for her master’s in public health when she meets Blue (Harry Shum Jr.) for lunch to talk about his next steps after being fired. He’s considering family medicine. Then they witness a hazing accident during pledge week, and the injured student is rushed to Grey Sloan.

Bailey stays to operate, and later she goes to bat for Blue with Dr. Seth Norton (James Wolk). Blue gets hired in Norton’s department, which means he’s a surgeon again. It’s a happy outcome, though it could strengthen Norton’s grip on the VIP floor.

Meredith visits from Boston to follow up on Charlie Ramos, a teenager in foster care with a hernia. She loses some of his trust when she’s forced to treat a wealthy VIP patient, and she hates it. Richard tries to get around her objections by offering to send some pro bono patients upstairs, including Charlie.

Things go wrong when an intern on the VIP floor, Dr. Spencer, rushes around and tries to draw Charlie’s blood without asking him first. She later makes a mistake in the OR, which luckily doesn’t kill her patient. Meredith asks her to step out, and Richard reminds her to focus on what’s in front of her. The whole episode lets Meredith make her case to Richard that Norton already has too much power.

Winston is now the residency director, and he’s struggling to stay neutral. After Jules comes up with a procedure idea on her own, he has her carry it out instead of Wes, but with Ben’s tut-tutting in his head, he snaps at her in the OR for making a mistake. The patient ends up worse off.

Ben has to call Winston out for favoring Jules, and now the couple can’t look each other in the eye. One reviewer noted that breaking up looks like the easy fix, but the pair still have to work together since Winston is her direct boss.

At home, Jo has quit being a doctor and is learning that being a full-time mom is far harder than she expected. Amelia and her girlfriend Toni spend the day with her, and Scout warms to Toni. Jo’s tears when she comes back into the kitchen show how much she needed it.

But Jo hasn’t noticed that Link isn’t fully recovered from his accident. He’s been looking at pain meds and worrying constantly about operating, and Jo just isn’t seeing it.

The episode closes quietly. Charlie wakes up on the VIP floor with Meredith by his side, and all he asks for is a game to play. Lucas also apologizes to Dr. Spencer for how he treated her and offers to take her out on a date when she’s sober.

There’s no big twist, but plenty of threads are left open. Simone’s secret, Link’s struggles, Norton’s growing power and Winston and Jules’ rift all carry into the next installment.

What should Simone do about her pregnancy?
