‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Actor Confirms He Won’t Be Returning for Doomsday

Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be one of the biggest Marvel crossovers ever, with a stacked cast featuring returning stars from across the multiverse.
Names like Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd, Florence Pugh, Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Pedro Pascal, and even Robert Downey Jr. are all set to appear. This time, Downey Jr. isn’t reprising his role as Iron Man, he’s taking on the villainous mantle of Doctor Doom.
The cast also includes familiar faces from the old X-Men films, including Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Alan Cumming, and Rebecca Romijn. The massive, hours-long livestream announcing these cast members still didn’t reveal everyone, and both Kevin Feige and some insiders hinted that more surprises are still to come.
But not everyone is returning. One familiar face from the Guardians of the Galaxy series has confirmed that he won’t be part of the upcoming multiversal chaos.
Sean Gunn, the brother of Guardians director and current DC Studios head James Gunn, recently revealed that he won’t be appearing in Avengers: Doomsday. Fans will recognize Sean Gunn as Kraglin Obfonteri, a character who appeared in six MCU projects: all three Guardians movies, the Holiday Special, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Avengers: Endgame.

The main reason for his absence is likely his new role in the DC Universe. Sean Gunn has joined the DCU as Maxwell Lord, a well-known villain in DC Comics often connected to the Justice League and Wonder Woman. He’s already confirmed to appear in the upcoming Superman film and the second season of Peacemaker, both arriving this year.
Given the circumstances, it makes sense that he won’t be involved with Marvel again anytime soon. Still, while many fans are excited to see his take on a full-blown supervillain, not everyone has been thrilled.
Some fans online accused James Gunn of nepotism for casting his brother in so many roles. Even Shazam star Zachary Levi weighed in on the topic over a year ago. In an interview about his future in the DCU, Levi was asked about actors like Jason Momoa and Sean Gunn sticking around. Levi seemed surprised, admitting he didn’t know Sean had played any major roles in the DCEU, because, at the time, he hadn’t yet (he had a minor role).
Levi responded with a pointed remark: “When you’re the brother of the guy who runs DC, I guess you get to play who you want.”
Whatever people think of it, Sean Gunn is clearly moving on to bigger things in the DC Universe. And as for Marvel fans, they’ll have to get through Avengers: Doomsday without Kraglin this time.
