HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series has added a new familiar face to its growing cast, with Peter Serafinowicz set to play the mischievous poltergeist Peeves.

The casting was confirmed through industry reporting and production updates tied to the series, which is currently in development at HBO. Peeves is a chaotic spirit who haunts the halls of Hogwarts, known in the books for causing trouble for students and staff alike. While he is a well-known character in J.K. Rowling’s novels, he was never included in the original film series.

Serafinowicz is represented by Curtis Brown Group, UTA, 3 Arts, and Peikoff Mahan. He recently appeared in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon film released last year. He is also widely recognized for his roles as Edgar Covington in Parks and Recreation and Denarian Saal in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014).

Beyond live-action roles, Serafinowicz has built a strong career in voice acting. He famously voiced Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, and has also voiced characters in animated films such as Sing and Sing 2, where he played Big Daddy.

The addition of Peeves has already sparked interest among fans, since the character has a unique history in the franchise. In the original film adaptation plans, British comedian Rik Mayall was cast as Peeves and even filmed scenes before the character was ultimately removed due to pacing and runtime constraints.

Mayall later spoke about the experience, recalling how he briefly worked on the film before being told his scenes would not be used. In his own words, “I did a little bit of filming then I went home and got the money – significant – then a month later they said ‘Rik, sorry about this, you’re not in the film.’” He later shared that he had already explained the situation to his children in a humorous way, believing he still appeared in the final movie.

HBO’s new adaptation of Harry Potter is being developed as a long-running series, with each season expected to adapt one book from the original novels. The project is designed to explore more detail from the source material than the original films were able to include.

According to Warner Bros. Discovery executives, the goal of the series is to expand the storytelling scope and offer a deeper version of the wizarding world. As JB Perrette, WBD’s president of global streaming and games, previously described, the project aims to be a major streaming event with a more detailed approach to the story and characters.

The series has already confirmed several major cast members. Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, with Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. John Lithgow has been cast as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Hagrid.

Written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, the series is set to debut in December on HBO and HBO Max. Production is also expected to continue beyond the first season, with Season 2 already in progress.

With the addition of Serafinowicz as Peeves, the series continues to build out a cast that brings more of the book’s lesser-seen characters to life, something the original films never fully explored.
