‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Already Hit With Rotten Tomatoes Review Bombing
HBO’s “House of the Dragon” Season 3 is getting one of its strongest critical receptions so far, but it is also facing a sharp split between critics and audiences.
The new season is performing better than earlier parts of the show, even reaching a “Certified Fresh” score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Critics have praised the direction, the new characters, and the bigger battles. The official critical consensus on the platform describes the season as a strong continuation of the story in Westeros, calling it “a reinvigorated and riveting third season… crafting a punchy prequel that matches the expectations of its predecessor.”
But the audience reaction is not matching the critical response. The audience score has dropped to around 69%, showing a clear gap between reviewers and viewers. This kind of split has started to draw attention online, with early signs of review-bombing affecting the show’s ratings.

Review-bombing refers to groups of viewers or fans leaving large numbers of negative ratings in a short period of time. The goal is usually to push the audience score down, even when critics are responding more positively. According to the Collider report, this situation has appeared before with other HBO projects, including Season 2 of “The Last of Us,” where actor Bella Ramsey faced targeted backlash from some viewers.
Some of the user reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are highly negative. One viewer wrote, “HBO desperately needs to clean house on the creative involved with this project,” while comparing the show unfavorably to another planned Game of Thrones spin-off, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.” Another user wrote, “Awful show. Acting is appalling, the writing is terrible,” showing a strong rejection of the new season. A third comment went further, saying the show “disrespects” George R.R. Martin, the original creator of the “Game of Thrones” universe.
Despite this backlash from some viewers, critics are not aligned with those opinions. One positive review highlighted the season’s impact and described it as “game-changing,” showing a clear divide in how the show is being received.
“House of the Dragon” is created by Ryan Condal and George R.R. Martin and continues to expand the world first introduced in “Game of Thrones.” The series stars Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith, and other returning and new cast members.
The show also performed strongly on streaming platforms. According to FlixPatrol data, the Season 3 premiere quickly climbed to the top of global HBO Max viewership charts after its release. This suggests that while online audience scores are divided, interest in the series remains high.

As the season continues, it remains unclear whether the audience score will stabilize or continue to fall. For now, “House of the Dragon” is in a rare position where critical success and audience reaction are pulling in very different directions, making it one of the most debated shows currently airing.
