‘House of the Dragon’ Stars Explain Rhaenyra’s Daenerys Connection and What Season 4 Means

The third season of ‘House of the Dragon’ ended with Rhaenyra Targaryen in a very different place from where she started. After a season filled with war, loss and difficult choices, the queen is now becoming more willing to use violence to protect her claim to the Iron Throne.

The change has already led to comparisons with Daenerys Targaryen from ‘Game of Thrones’. Both characters believe they have a greater purpose, but their paths to power are very different.

Speaking to reporters after the finale, ‘House of the Dragon’ co-creator and showrunner Ryan Condal said he welcomes the comparison.

“I think that’s wonderful if people draw parallels between this and the original series,” Condal said. He explained that both shows explore what the Iron Throne does to people who want it or already have it.

Condal also pointed out an important difference between Rhaenyra and Daenerys. “Daenerys only got to the Iron Throne at the very end, after she had destroyed the city,” he said. Rhaenyra, meanwhile, has already experienced ruling and is now being changed by the pressure of holding onto power.

For Condal, that is one of the larger ideas running through the entire ‘Game of Thrones’ universe. “It’s pride and power, and how power corrupts, and how far it corrupts,” he explained.

Emma D’Arcy, who plays Rhaenyra, also sees the character’s transformation as an important part of the story. D’Arcy said the writers wanted the audience to understand how someone can slowly move toward authoritarian behavior.

“I really wanted to make sure that that journey was a legible one,” D’Arcy said. The actor added that the story raises questions about how people deal with power and how empathy can be damaged by repeated trauma and political pressure.

The finale made that change especially clear. Rhaenyra orders Daemon to attack Tumbleton and eliminate the Hightower leadership. The battle ends with huge losses on both sides, including the death of Ormund Hightower and Roddy the Ruin. Ulf and Silverwing also turn against the people they were supposed to help.

While the battle is unfolding, Rhaenyra is fighting a different kind of war in King’s Landing. She demands to be officially recognized as queen, but the High Septon refuses. Rhaenyra then orders his execution.

She follows that shocking decision by telling the people of King’s Landing about the Targaryen prophecy involving the White Walkers and the promised hero. The scene is another major change from George R.R. Martin’s ‘Fire & Blood’.

Condal confirmed that the speech does not appear in the book. He said the writers wanted it to show a major shift in Rhaenyra’s relationship with the people.

“We wanted a real seismic change, a sea change in Rhaenyra’s relationship to her people,” Condal said.

The finale then delivers another devastating blow when Helaena takes her own life. Rhaenyra later discovers a tapestry Helaena had finished, showing what appears to be a dark future for the queen.

Now the story is moving toward its final chapter. Condal told reporters that the team has already mapped out the main story for Season 4 and that he has submitted a draft of the first episode to HBO.

There is no confirmed release date yet, but Condal is already promising a larger final season. “As crazy and big as Season 3 was, I think Season 4 is going to be even bigger,” he said.

He also teased new characters, dragons and locations, adding that they are excited to bring the story to its conclusion.

“We’re very excited to get back in,” Condal said. “We have new characters, and new dragons and new locations all to come, that I think are gonna make it a very worthy, final season.”

With Rhaenyra now closer than ever to becoming the kind of ruler her enemies feared, the final season could be the most dangerous chapter of the Targaryen civil war yet.
