Hugh Jackman Names the Actor Who Once Could Have Been a Great Wolverine

For more than 2 decades, Hugh Jackman has been closely linked with Wolverine, becoming one of the most recognizable superhero actors in movie history. Even after saying goodbye to the character several times, conversations about who could eventually take over the iconic role have never really stopped.

Fans have spent years suggesting possible successors, with countless actors being mentioned whenever Marvel’s mutant reboot becomes a topic of discussion. But long before those fan castings became common, Jackman himself had already shared the name of one actor he believed could have stepped into Wolverine’s boots.

While promoting ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ in 2014, Jackman was asked who he thought would make a worthy replacement for the clawed mutant. Speaking in an interview with Yahoo Movies UK, the actor didn’t hesitate to name fellow Australian Heath Ledger.

“Originally, when I played it, when he was alive, God rest his soul, I thought Heath Ledger could be a good young version of [Wolverine],” Jackman said.

Ledger passed away in 2008 at the age of 28 following an accidental overdose. Before his death, he delivered one of the most celebrated comic book movie performances of all time as the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight’, a role that earned him a posthumous Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Jackman’s comments have continued to resurface over the years whenever discussions turn to recasting Wolverine. Many fans have looked back on the interview and imagined what Ledger’s version of Logan might have been like, especially after seeing the intensity and emotional depth he brought to the Joker.

Although Jackman admitted another actor would eventually inherit the role, he also acknowledged that it would be difficult to watch someone else take over. “It would be a little weird,” Jackman said. “I know it’s going to happen.”

At the time of the interview, Jackman had already portrayed Wolverine in 7 ‘X-Men’ films and was preparing for the release of ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’. His performance had helped define Fox’s long-running mutant franchise, making the character one of the studio’s biggest attractions.

Over the years, speculation surrounding Wolverine’s future has only grown stronger. Numerous actors have been rumored or fan-cast for the part, but Marvel Studios has yet to officially announce who will eventually succeed Jackman as the MCU’s primary Wolverine.

Looking back, Jackman’s choice remains one of the most interesting “what if” moments in superhero casting. While audiences will never get the chance to see Heath Ledger play Wolverine, the actor’s legacy continues to spark conversations about the comic book roles he might have taken on if his career had continued.
