Hugh Jackman Talks His Return as Wolverine: “I Swear To You, When I Said I Was Done I Really Thought I Was Done”

Only a few weeks stand between us and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’. The movie is significant for several reasons. It’s MCU’s first “R” rated movie, it’s the movie that’s going to bring Deadpool into the MCU, and it’s Jackman’s first appearance as Wolverine since his on-screen death in ‘Logan.’

Jackman was supposed to retire from the role years ago, and he claimed that in numerous interviews over the years, and yet he is back, in a movie that’s supposed to redeem the studio from the line of failures that they released over the last year.

Recently, we’ve learned that Feige himself discouraged Jackman from returning as Wolverine, not to spoil the perfect ending for the character that ‘Logan’ had. But through some clever plot devices, he can now return without touching THE original Wolverine.

Jackman recently spoke to Fandango and explained what motivated him to return to the character, considering that he’s been jokingly called a liar by Reynolds for not sticking to his previous statements:

I swear to you, when I said I was done I really thought I was done. But, in the back of my head, ever since I saw Deadpool 1, I was like “Those two characters together…”

The reason why Jackman can return to his superhero role without undoing ‘Logan’ is through Multiverse, a concept introduced quite a while ago in the MCU, and considering that we are currently in the Multiverse Saga, it seems fitting that you can resurrect pretty much whoever you want.

But, this is not your classic resurrection, the Wolverine we will be seeing in the MCU won’t be the version of Wolverine from ‘Logan’ or from the X-Men franchise, it’s going to be a completely different variant.

From what we’ve seen from the trailers and special CinemaCon clips, this Wolverine variant is for some reason responsible for the downfall of his reality and the fall of X-Men for which he is shunned. Deadpool will try to persuade him to join him in his quest to save his own reality.

Reportedly, this won’t be Jackman’s last appearance in the role in the MCU.
