Everyone who considers himself a DC fan already knows that DC Extended Universe is counting down its last few months of existence, with only two movies left to be released by the end of this year. The second-to-last DCEU movie ‘Blue Beetle’ is less than two weeks away, and after that, we’ll only need to wait for December 20, when ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ will finally put this dying cinematic universe in the past.

DC fans already know what to expect from Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios post-DCEU. Next year we’re looking forward to the Elseworlds project ‘Joker: Folie à Deux,’ a sequel to 2019’s ‘Joker,’ which was nominated for eleven Academy Awards, out of which the main star Joaquin Phoenix won the award for Best Actor. ‘Folie à Deux’ is currently the only theatrical DC movie set to be released in 2024, but there are some other projects as well, including the upcoming animated series ‘Creature Commandos,’ which is the first project officially set in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU, a soft-reboot universe of DCEU.

James Gunn provides a promising update on the first DCU project!

Earlier this year, James Gunn uncovered the first movies and series set in the upcoming DCU. The first movie, ‘Superman: Legacy’ will kick off the franchise on the big screen in July 2025, but the franchise’s canon will start a year earlier with an animated series ‘Creature Commandos,’ which is currently in post-production.

James Gunn’ co-CEO of DC Studios and the writer of ‘Creature Commandos,’ recently answered some fan questions on Threads, and he officially announced that the upcoming animated series will consist of seven episodes and that the voice acting for the series has already been finalized. Therefore it’s not expected that the series will suffer delays due to the ongoing strikes in Hollywood.

Many movie and TV productions this year have been put on hold due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in Hollywood. Therefore it’s expected that many projects set to be released in 2024 will most likely be delayed. The only exceptions are productions that weren’t affected by the strikes, such as ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2 and projects that finished their productions in the first half of this year.

DC’s series ‘The Penguin,’ which production is currently on hold, is slated to be released next year, but it’s hard to say if it’s going to be ready for release as it was originally planned. However, since the SAG-AFTRA strike is preventing promotional work as well, many movies are in danger of being delayed even if they are already completed, but that is because the studios’ fear that the lack of promotional work might affect the movies’ commercial results. Television productions aren’t expected to suffer from that problem.

The upcoming animated series ‘Creature Commandos’ will follow a homonymous team of military superhumans who fought against the Axis powers during World War II. Written by James Gunn, the series stars Frank Grillo, Maria Bakalova, Indira Varma, Zoë Chao, Alan Tudyk, David Harbour, Sean Gunn, and Steve Agee. Viola Davis will also reprise her role as Amanda Waller from previous DC projects.

‘Creature Commandos’ is set to premiere on the Max streaming service in 2024.
