Jordan Belfort’s story is getting a new look in The Real Wolf of Wall Street, a three-part docuseries that promises to reveal a darker side of the man who inspired Martin Scorsese’s hit film The Wolf of Wall Street.

Paramount+ has released the first trailer for the upcoming series, which goes back into the rise and fall of Belfort, the former stockbroker who became famous for his time running Stratton Oakmont before being convicted of financial crimes. While Scorsese’s 2013 movie showed Belfort’s wild lifestyle, the new documentary claims the real events were even more extreme.

The trailer features people connected to Belfort’s story questioning how accurately the Hollywood version captured what happened. One person interviewed in the series says, “A lot of the movie was bulls—,” while another claims, “The Wolf of Wall Street doesn’t even accurately portray the level of insanity that occurred.”

The documentary will explore the world around Belfort, including his company, his criminal activities, and the people affected by his actions. According to Paramount+, the series will include never-before-seen footage, thousands of internal FBI documents, archival interviews, and new conversations with people from Belfort’s inner circle.

One of the key people featured in the project is Nadine, Belfort’s former wife. The series will look at her experience and how her relationship with Belfort changed as his success turned into chaos.

The official description for The Real Wolf of Wall Street says the documentary will reveal “the explosive true story of Belfort’s meteoric rise, his stunning fall and those he left stranded in his wake.”

The release of the series also brings back the long-running debate surrounding Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street. The 2013 movie was a huge success, earning more than $400 million worldwide and receiving five Oscar nominations, including Best Director for Martin Scorsese and Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio.

DiCaprio’s performance as Belfort was widely praised, with many viewers fascinated by how he portrayed a character who was charming but deeply flawed. Entertainment Weekly even ranked it among the best performances of DiCaprio’s career.

However, the film has also faced criticism over whether it properly condemned Belfort’s behavior or made his lifestyle seem exciting. The movie showed his drug use, illegal financial schemes, and treatment of women, but some viewers argued that the story’s humor and energy made the criminal lifestyle appear appealing.

DiCaprio himself addressed the experience of playing Belfort after winning a Golden Globe for the role. “Making movies is an interesting process,” he said. “You put your entire life on hold. And these characters really do envelop you, for better or for worse. So, thank God none of the attributes of this character rubbed off on my real life, because I probably wouldn’t be standing here today.”

Now, The Real Wolf of Wall Street aims to show a different perspective on Belfort’s story. The series will revisit the events behind one of Hollywood’s most controversial crime movies and explore whether the real-life version was even more unbelievable than what audiences saw on screen.

The Real Wolf of Wall Street premieres July 14 on Paramount+.
