Kaitlyn Dever Warns Fans to Brace Themselves for ‘The Last of Us’ Season 3: “You have no idea what’s to come”

Kaitlyn Dever is getting fans ready for a tough ride in the next season of The Last of Us. In Season 2 of HBO’s hit post-apocalyptic show, she plays Abby, a character that fans of the video game will definitely remember, some love her, some hate her, and everyone has an opinion. And now, Dever says things are only going to get more intense.
Speaking to press recently, Dever explained just how emotional and challenging it was to step into the role of Abby, especially during one of the show’s biggest and most talked-about scenes: the death of Joel, played by Pedro Pascal.
The second season jumps right into that moment, showing Abby’s revenge-driven attack on Joel, with Ellie, played by Bella Ramsey, forced to watch. It’s a moment that shook players of the game years ago, and now it’s having the same impact on people watching the show.
For Dever, filming that scene wasn’t easy. She shared how much she leaned on Pascal during that powerful moment. “I’ve never felt so carried by another actor in my life,” she said. “We were really supporting each other… it was such a pivotal moment for both of these characters.”
Even after the show aired, Dever appreciated how Pascal supported her, especially when some fans weren’t happy about the direction of the story. “He posted behind-the-scenes photos as if to remind people this is fiction,” she said, referring to how Pascal tried to ease the backlash with a more human and behind-the-scenes look at the show.
Dever also hinted that the emotional rollercoaster is far from over. She said that showrunner Craig Mazin hasn’t given her too many details about Season 3, but he’s made it clear that things are going to get even more intense. “That’s all I know about what’s going to happen,” Dever said. “Craig just keeps saying to me, ‘You have no idea what’s to come for Season 3. Just buckle up.’”
This role has been deeply personal for Dever in many ways. She’s used to playing emotional roles, but Abby has pushed her in new directions. Dever has also been dealing with the recent loss of her mother, which added even more weight to her performance. Filming wasn’t just emotionally heavy, it was physically exhausting too. From action-packed scenes to emotionally raw moments, she’s giving everything she has.
And all that hard work is being noticed. Fans and critics are already praising her performance as Abby, calling it one of her strongest yet. And according to Dever, the journey is only just beginning. Season 3 will take Abby’s story even further, and if her warning is anything to go by, fans should get ready for another emotional hit.
