Marvel Just Gave Us Our Best Look Yet at ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s’ Terrifying Showdown With the Hulk
A new image and a video are making the rounds and have fans buzzing over the upcoming clash between Spider-Man and the Hulk in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. The shot shows Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk mid-rampage through rubble while Tom Holland’s Spider-Man swings in from the opposite side, and it is the clearest glimpse yet of what looks like one of the film’s biggest set pieces.
The pairing has been rumored for months, and recent trailers have started to confirm just how central the Hulk will be to Peter Parker’s story this time around. Footage has shown Peter telling Bruce Banner that he is losing his mind and totally out of control, seeking Banner’s help to fix whatever is happening to him. Banner reveals he has found a way to suppress his own mutating DNA, only for the device to fail and trigger a transformation right in front of Spider-Man.
The film picks up several years after ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, with Peter Parker navigating a new era after Doctor Strange’s memory spell erased all recollection of his existence from everyone on Earth, including Zendaya’s MJ. That amnesia angle, combined with Peter’s unstable new powers, appears to be what pushes him toward Banner in the first place, setting up a mentor relationship that quickly goes sideways once the Hulk enters the picture.
Sony has been careful about how much of the fight it reveals. New footage teased Spider-Man using a modified Shocker gauntlet to even the odds against the Hulk, hinting that Peter may lean on Damage Control tech and his own resourcefulness rather than raw strength to survive the encounter. Trailers so far have mostly shown Spider-Man trying to get away from the Hulk as quickly as possible, given how badly outmatched he is in a straight fight.
Behind the scenes, Marvel reportedly considered pushing the Hulk in an even stranger direction. Concept art from the film’s official art book shows extensive work on a Gray Hulk design for Banner’s transformation sequence, but the studio ultimately cut it in favor of the classic green Savage Hulk audiences already know. That choice was reportedly made to keep the focus on delivering the iconic powerhouse fans expect rather than introducing an unfamiliar look mid movie.
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ rounds out its cast with Sadie Sink in a still mostly unnamed role and Jacob Batalon returning as Ned. There is also speculation that Ruffalo’s return here could tie into his future appearances in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ or ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ as the Multiverse Saga winds down. Tom Holland has been vocal about his excitement for the project, telling Esquire it is the best Spider-Man movie he has ever made.
Who do you think would win in a full fight?
‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, and it swings into theaters on July 31. With the Hulk officially confirmed and new footage dropping almost weekly, the marketing push is clearly betting that this unlikely duel is the film’s biggest hook heading into release.
